question on certain rent board etiquette

do you think its wrong to mislead fellow dvc'ers to make a buck?

I have seen some pretty shady activity on the rent board lately. I dont think its a very good practice to tell fellow dvc'ers you are stuck in a certain situation and can only pay "x" amount for the points and then turn around and sell hundreds of points you have accumulated for more than the going rate

Whoever is doing that probably solicits old people for donations to fake charities for a living.

I don't know whether unscrupulous dealings like you describe would be cause for prohibiting the person from using the boards, but it's worth looking into. Certainly DISboards can't police every post, but if they know somebody is ripping people off it seems like they would want to take some action. Have you notified them of the specifics?

I havent yet, I am debating on how to handle it. I almost didnt even post because I know some will say its up to each individual to decide upon selling for whatever they want and buying for that matter to.

I didnt sell to this person because in myh eyes their email to me was a joke, but obviously the person sold the idea to quite a few people .

I really hope they have a hard time selling these particular points

Well, that's true. But sleasy is sleasy, and I would think DISboards would want to know if people were using the board to buy low and sell high. I don't think that's what their intent was in the first place. Also, slease is rather out of character for what DISboards is trying to do I think. I'm sure they don't want to be the "rental cops," but if something smacked them in the face, I don't think they'd want unscrupulous stuff on their boards.

Personally I think I would be naming names! But I never spend much time there. Also if I saw my points be "re-rented" I would really consider cancelling the initial contract and making a refund!

Your other option is to post after all of the "re-rent posts' With WARNING SLEEZEBALL ONLY PAID X FOR THESE POINTS LOL!

My advice would be "Don't fall for the Okey-Doke"

These people have been in operation for a while and if they can get your points for pennies on the dollar they will take them.
From what I have seen is the boards don't get involved in these personal transactions. They post those sticky warnings at the top and and move all unrelated threads but that is as far as they get involved.
I understand, because these boards are free and this is not Ebay where they get a certain percentage, so they are providing a space to allow unregulated free trade.

I don't like everything I see on the RTB either, but it is definitely "seller and buyer beware" Like SYM's "The best consumer is an educated consumer"

As far as cancelling goes, most want the points transferred to their account, so there is no cancellation option. Just make sure you are happy with your terms before transferring and after that those points are out of your control.

Thought of option three, but it's a lot of work.

However, if you are a renter who discovers you were tricked by this... Call your local IRS.... Point out that the person you rented from is running a rent business and you want to be sure they paid the taxes. If they would do this, I am almost willing to bet they aren't declaring the income! LOL!

I think it goes farther than etiquette. I think it's unethical, whith some of the things the people say and do.

I agree, but it's not against board policy from what I can tell. Naming names would be against policy but I don't think quoting the posts without comments would be a violation.

So these certain renters are buying points and reselling them?? How much profit can be in this?? It seems to me that these points gathered from multiple members with different UY and home resorts would not be worth the hassle?
On the flip side, if members weren't be so eagar to sell points so cheaply (<$12), maybe there would be less of this activity.

actually without getting into too much detail, because although I have been watching the proceedings and have had interaction through email nothing is 100% dead on accurate, its only what I have noticed and perceived from my end

all the points are for 1 resort and I am talking in the range of 1000 points or so, so the profit is decent, in my eyes

but my problem isnt so much with someone making money, its the flat out lying and misleading that was occuring, leading one to believe they were in a tough spot and needed these points to really complete a reservation.

I agree. Simply buying points from someone and re-selling them is capitalism. If you really want to put that much time and effort in for the return, then go for it. But lying to someone in order to get points at a low price and then re-selling them, is unethical, unscrupulous, undignified, unconscientious, unconscionable, underhanded, unethical, unfair, unprincipled and unworthy of the Dis-Boards.

Im with you. There should be a special place in Hell for people who use fake hard luck stories to scam people in any way. They obviously have no conscience, I wonder how they sleep at night.

I think you pretty much nailed it.

We were contacted by a woman who actually told me she had started a business renting points and setting up Disney vacations for her "friends". She went on to tell me how lovely "The Johnson" family was, and that they wouldn't be able to pay more than $8 pp, so could we please help make this dream vacation come true. At the time she wasn't even a DVC member, but she is now, hence all of the clatter for trasnferring points (at least as to this individual).

I declined and recommend a value resort, or staying off property. Now I see she is back on the board soliciting for $8 points all over again, with another story to pull at the heart strings of some unsuspecting DVC member.

It just has a dirty feel to it.....

So the problem is that DVCers are a generous bunch and are far to trusting of stories from complete strangers.

As with any panhandler you have to gauge whether the person's intention is to take your money and buy a meal OR take your money and buy the MD20/20.

To much charity may be making the problem worse.

Um, excuse me, but if these people are so hard up for money and can only afford to pay $x, then why in the **** are they even taking a Disney vacation? I know a lot of people, my sister included who would love to visit WDW every year with us, but they just can't afford it, so guess what??? She stays home!

We can't expect the DIS to police this, I agree it's dirty and unethical. Not the idea of trying (or actually) making money, but the solicitations envoking a fraudulent story.

I think we (the good dvc'ers) need to protect ourselves and those innocent well intended by raising the awareness of this moral crime and 'out' those whom we feel very certain are doing this.
