Question on Airfares

This may sound naive, but how do you get a reduction in airfare when the prices drop? Does it depend on buying a higher priced ticket that has no restrictions in the first place? It seems I usually latch onto to a ticket price that either doesn't drop in price, or has dropped so little that I have never inquired about getting a credit for the difference in price. Can someone explain how it works. Thanks

I think I found my answer a few posts below this one.
Internet fares will not be redued, but tickets purchased by phone may be reduced?

The policy on refunds, depends on the carrier. Your "refund" will almost always be a credit or voucher for future travel with that airline. The credit expires in a year. If the price on
your flight(s) goes down; you can call the carrier about obtaining a voucher for the difference. Online purchase, or non-refundable doesn't make the difference. Carrier policy does. Southwest is very friendly about accomadating fare reductions.:)

Thanks for the explanation on airfare reductions in price.
