Can someone explain how this works...

Let's say we buy in at AKV this year & that makes AKV our home resort. Then later, we want to add on points at Contemporary DVC. Does that make Contemporary our home resort too or not? Do you need a certain amount of points for add on to make it a home resort? We know we get the 11 mo mark to book & wondered if adding on points at a diff DVC would give us home resort advantage there.
Also, if we buy 160 points at AKV 1st, then add on 50 points at Contemporary later, can we combine those points towards one trip? Is that considered a transfer? Otherwise, then it wouldn't be worth having a small amt of points at a diff location, right? What is the fee for a transer? And you're only limited to one transfer a year, right? Just trying to figure all this out.:confused3
Thanks for the help!

Ok, I am new at this too but I will try to help where I can. If I get this wrong, someone correct me, please!

You must buy your initial contract of 160 if you buy thru Disney. You can buy less if you buy resale. Once you are in the system, you can add on any amount at any resort. You will get home resort priority at both but you cannot combine the points in the way you are thinking. They retain the home resort priority at the 11 month mark at each resort. They cannot be combined until the 7 month mark for use at both resorts if used together. You could bank and borrow with the 50 points contract for a stay at that resort at the 11 month mark for a stay every couple of years if you chose. A lot of people have small contracts and alternate their stays between their resorts. To make it work the easiest, it would be best to have the same UY for both contracts. In your example the AKV would be the master contract and the CRV would be an add on - both with the same member number.

Anyone think of anything else? I hope I helped.

I'll give this a shot!!!

In order of the questions you asked:

Yes, once you add on at the Contemporary you have home resort status there, too. You have a home resort anywhere you own points.

You must add on at least 25 points - there are no smaller contracts sold. But owning a 25 point contract makes you just as much an owner as owning 250 points.

Once you own at a particular resort, you have 11 month status at that resort. So if you own at two resorts, you can make reservations up to 11 months at each resort. BUT - and this is the big but - you can ONLY use the points you actually own at that resort 11 months in advance. You CANNOT combine them at the 11 month point. However, you can at the 7 month mark - then all points can be combined and you can use all your different home resorts together. I don't think it is considered a transfer - you are just using your points all together instead of separately. As long as you are talking about making reservations at the actual DVC resorts themselves, and not trading out into II or something like that. That goes over my head so someone else will have to explain that!!!! But, if you had AKV and Contemporary points, you wouldn't be charged any fee for combining them to make one DVC reservation.

Hope that helps!!!

An add on question if I may...

How would transferred points work? If I went over to the buy/rent area and bought/transferred 100 points let say...Do those retain their home advantage or are those points only good as generic points?

Example I'm thinking would be have your AKV 160 and Contemp 50...Buy 100 points of Contemp from someone...Can i then use 150 points at the 11 month window with my newly purchased one time points?

Or am I limited by my 50 points regardless of the additional points home location?

Thanks,

Chris

Transferred points retain their home resort, so yes, you'd be able to use 150 points to book CRV 11 months out for that year. Remember that you are limited to one transfer per use year.

also, if you buy two contracts with different UYs (possiblity if bought via resale), it is considered a transfer to combine the points. you'd only be able to do this once per year.

Don't they retain their UY too, Chuck? If so, that certainly has to be factored into their ability to be used at his 11 month mark. :confused3:

Yes, but transferred points can be banked if necessary.

But use year month has nothing to do with the 11 month reservation window, as long as the points will be available for use on the dates of the stay.

Thanks Chuck. That's not the way I had it explained to me. Let me make sure I have this straight.

Hypothetically:

1) I have 50 points with a June UY at BCV

2) I have 200 points with a Sept UY at SSR

Seperate contracts, obviously, for purposes of this illustration.

I decide I want to book a 2 BR at BCV for May 1 of next year and it's now June 5. I call and try to reserve my 2 BR for 4 nights only to learn that 50 points isn't enough (LOL). I tell them to transfer the necessary points to complete the reservation from my current points at SSR (I haven't used any this year) and to bank them into next year for use with this ressie.

Is this right? I could do this?

Thanks everyone for your help! So, I can combine the points at diff DVCs after the 7 month mark. Interesting! And the suggestion to borrow or rent points towards the smaller contract is a good idea.
Thanks everyone!

Not exactly, your September contract would be in its 2007 use year, your June contract would be in its 2008 use year. You could transfer points from your Sept 2008 Use Year to your BCV Contract, but you could not use SSR points, even if they are transferred in, to make a reservation at BCV at 11 months, as they retain their SSR home resort status. You could not make that reservation until 7 months out using the SSR points.

You could borrow points on your BCV contract from 2009 Use Year to make that reservation at 11 months out.

Gotcha Chuck. I see now.

I didn't read enough a few posts up and thought you guys were borrowing from a different home resort at the 11 month mark and that's what had me confused. I read furthere and saw he was getting more points from someone else at the Compemporary (in his scenario). I didn't read far enough. I'm guilty of that a lot. LOL

Thanks for your help. I'm pretty sure I have it now.
