DH and I are done having kids, and I am contemplating a Tubal Ligation. Can you tell me your experiences? I definitely don't want anymore kids, DS is 12 and DD is 10. I am 37, in good health, but overweight. How long are you in the hospital? How long before you can work/resume normal activities? TIA.

I used to work with someone who had a tubal on a Friday and was back at work on Monday. She looked like she was in pain though, so I'm not sure it's such a good idea to go back that quickly.

It's a lot easier on the guy, why don't your husband have it done.

I'm not sure my experience will help here any. I had mine right after having my daughter while I was in the hospital already. I was required to stay one additional night because of it. I don't recall any pain from it though. I had the normal delivery type pain though, but I don't recall any from that surgery.

We have talked about it, and I don't really care who does it, but he is a bit more apprehensive. I will talk to my doctor next month at my check up, but wanted to see how other people did with it.

I also had one done on a Friday and was back at work on Monday. My "baby" was about 5 then, and I really overdid it on that weekend, plus my mooching BIL and SIL came over for dinner on Saturday. They gratefully stayed for dinner, and DH never told his brother that stopping by unannounced that day wasn't a good time for us. I was furious - but that's a whole different post.

I wish I would have taken off that Monday too, but was back at work.

Actually, it is much, much easier for him to have it done. For several reasons.

1) His is an out patient surgery, you would have to go under in an OR.

2) His is much more inexpensive than your procedure for the above mentioned reason.

3) A lot of women who do this gain more weight and have trouble dropping it.

4) My personal favorite..... You have already taken two for the team. By golly it is his turn. :teeth: My DH is getting ready to have this done.

A few members at my gym had their tubes tied and they couldn't be happier. They said they were bloated for like a few days but fine after that.

::yes:: It is definately MUCH easier for the man to have it done.

I had mine tied when my ds was a month old. I wanted to have it done right after delivery, but I had a slight complication and the dr's made me wait.

They do it as day surgery. As soon as you wake up and prove you can drink something without getting sick, you can go home. I was at the hospital for about 5 hours (I tend to sleep really well when I'm under anthesia:rolleyes: ). Since I was still post-partum, they told me to keep with the light duty stuff-no heavy lifting, etc. When I went in for my 6 week post-partum check up 2 weeks later, they took out the stitches (they do the surgery through the belly button).

Good luck. If you could talk your dh into doing it, I'd go that route.

Even with a tubal, I'm on bc pills. Not for the bc function of them though.

well I'm not a lady...lol, but my wife just had this done a month ago. She went in to the room at noon and we were out of the hospital at 4:00. She was in alot of pain that night, but it was mostly a pressure type of pain. They have to fill you with gases to be able to move around and see, and the gas rises which cause some makor pain in your upper body. She preety much slept all Friday, and was much beter but the pressuer pains still there on Saturday. On Sunday she was out and about at the mall, and back to work on Monday.

She was also told no lifting over 10 pounds for 1 week, so dad got to have ds all to himself for a week....lol.

All in all she said it was not hard at all.

If you can use another form of bc for awhile....

My OB/GYN told me about a new procedure that he will be able to do in his office. It involves going through the "natural opening" rather than cutting into your abdomen. They tie off the tubes with rags or something like that.

I didn't quite get the whole concept, but the part I liked was 1)no general anesthesia and 2)doing it in the dr office, not the hospital.

I love my OB and trust him completely, so I am willing to wait a few months to find out more about this option.

I had the male procedure done and it was very easy, took about a half hour, and there was a little soreness for a day. When my wife and I discussed our options the vasectomy made the most sense.

OT.... Hey DenMig did you have it done locally? Chrisite or Carle? If Carle, what doctor? TIA

I had it done several years ago and was warned about possible pain from trapped air but I had no ill effects whatsoever and carried on as normal a couple of hours later.
