Question for those with windows XP??

How do you go about running scandisk & degrag with XP? I've been trying to do this with no luck. In 98 I put my computer in safe mode and away it went. In XP I can't tell if it's even working. It's been six months since we had the computer, so I am sure it will take awhile to complete. Do you use your task scheduler to do this at night or do it by hand? I have never used task scheduler, but thought it might be easier. How often should I be doing these procedures? I have no clue with this machine.

Click on Start, all programs, accessories, system tools and defrag. Make sure all your programs are closed out. Let it run.

Scandisk - I am not sure; I just installed XP so I haven't used it yet.

chkdsk replaces scandsk. There is no scandsk on XP. And defrag can be run with other programs running in XP, it does not make it restart, just slows it down a bit. I defrag the pc weekly, at the end of the day. I do not use scheduler as that involves user optons which XP has and I do not bother with. I just click and it goes. Actually, I use Norton's version.

Thanks Dan!! I did everything but defrag. Now it's time to get that done. I think I'll try weekly that way it won't take so long. I have a feeling this is going to take forever!!!

To get into Check Disk:

Go to Start and then My Computer. Right click your hard drive (C: or whatever letter your others are) and it will bring up a window. Under Error checking, click on Check Now. Then write a check for $50 and send it to me as a tip.
