Question for those who've had trouble conceiving (back from the dr 1/21)

Tina, I have been following this thread. Sounds like you have an excellent doctor. I hope we see you on the Moms-To-Be thread soon!!

Tina,

I'm so glad to hear your experience went well today. A good doctor who listens truly makes a difference. I hope you are on the road to getting pregnant and knowing you've done all that you can.

I am so glad you found a doctor you connected with who was understanding. That's a great start. :flower3:

Great update!!!! Sound sliek you all will work well together. :) I am so happy to hear that. :)

Step #2 was for me to have a Hystosalpingogram (HSG). This was a very painful prcedure for me, but I have NEVER heard anyone else say the same. At the time I almost passed out.

I had that as well and I thought it was horrible. Necessary, but awful. It hurt so much that I couldn't walk out of there on my own. Whether it forced a blockage out or the pain was just due to my PCOS and endometriosis, who knows, but I'd have someone there with you who can drive you home if you have a bad reaction to the test. I'm not trying to scare you, but I am VERY grateful that my DH was there because I would not have been able to get myself the 1/2 hour drive home.

I would also suggest that you pick and chose who you're willing to share your concerns with. People can be rather insensitive when it comes to infertility issues. I can't tell you how many times I heard well I get pregnant just being in the same room as my husband and although I'm sure people don't mean to be rude it just heightened my need to tell them to stick it.

And on the other hand, you get the people who are trying to be nice but ask constantly. I needed my mother to help me with watching my DD during some of the testing and treatment so I had to kind of fill her in on what was happening and she didn't mean any harm but was constantly asking if we had any news yet, why was it taking so long, etc.... it's hard for someone who just gets pregnant easily and comes from a family of similar people to understand.

This is a very good idea, because infertility treatment is very easy to get "caught up" in and before you know it has taken over your life, sucked away all your money etc.

There are people who may disagree with what I am about to say, but I always told DH that, since most of the "stuff" was happening to me, that I'd let him know when I had enough or when I thought it was beginning to affect our marriage and our life together. He was OK with that. We did a whole gamut of fertility stuff, at great expense to us (our insurance didn't cover a whole lot) but we both were OK with that.

I agree, it is good to know your limits. Disney Doll, of all the odd things, for us it was my husband who wanted to put limits on it because he felt it was unfair for me to keep putting my body through all of that to have our baby. Either way though, it's good to discuss these things before you're stuck making a decision in the "heat of the moment" so to speak

The Clomid also made me crazy angry so be prepared for that. :scared1: It was totally worth it though. ;)

Oooh, yeah, the Clomid crazies. When I told the RE that it was making me a complete "b" he laughed and said, yeah, that happens, most people just don't admit to it ;)

Tina, I'm so happy for you that you had a good appointment and it seems that you've found a wonderful doctor to work with- having the right support helps so much on this journey. I wish you much success

I'll try to keep this brief but here's my story:

conceived DD #1 while on the pill. RE later said that the pill probably normalized my cycles for the first time, which is kind of funny but I'll take it!

Tried to have another baby and figured it would be easy since we were actually trying that time. Wrong. We started trying while #1 was still little as we wanted them to be close in age.

I did charting and ovulation kits and found that I never ovulated. Tried Clomid in increasing doses, while still monitoring ovulation- nothing happened. Saw the RE and had all the tests mentioned performed and was diagnosed with PCOS and (at the time) mild endometriosis. Used injectible meds coupled with IUI and eventually got pregnant with and had twins

Went on to have lots of problems with endo including lots of bleeding (like for four months straight) and needed surgery to help with that. Was told that I would not conceive on my own again and if I wanted another baby to not bother with anything, just come back to the RE.

Had a miscarriage in 2008.

Never used birth control except in attempts to control the endo and surprise surprise I am currently pregnant! So, never say never I guess! There will be almost 6 years between this baby and my twins.

I hope that you have similar success (though a shorter treatment time!)

Great Update Tina!!

Hubby and I have been trying to concieve for about 10years. We just finished our second cycle of clomid....with no luck. Last month i was put on Musinex for hostile cervical mucus. BUT I think I was put on it too late:sad2:

I tested on wed and got a BFN...but no aunt flo YET...so we shall see...

Also....I got my TSH levels checked a year ago and they were LOW....that explained so many symptoms i was having...tired, weak, irregular periods... Now at least my periods are on time and no more bad symptoms!! So its good to get all of your bloodwork checked out!! Goodluck to you and its important that you have a great doctor!!!

Come over to the TTC thread....we would LOVE to have you over there!! A lot of GREAT women on that thread...great support!!!!

UPDATE

Thank you all so very much. I felt much more prepared after reading this thread this morning. I was so nervous and emotional going into my appointment but determined.

I feel so lucky because my doctor is a very caring female and understands my concerns. She mentioned most of everything that was said in this thread. I have to do a lot of bloodwork in the upcoming month and I do have to schedule and ultrasound and the dye test thingy.

The doctor believes that I should begin Clomid in March but she says we aren't playing with this for the next year waiting and hoping that if at 6 months there aren't results then we move to the next game plan. I explained that my husband and I have talked about our limits which she is glad to hear and that we have a plan.

So anyways thank you all for your help and suggestions and well wishes. I don't know what will come of it but I'm ready to fight for what I want and having a doctor that wants that too helps so very much. Not to mention all of the dis lol cheering on my sex life:rotfl::banana:

I couldnt help but follow this thread as I have always admired your strength and courage as a military wife. I am so happy to hear you found a great woman GYN who is forward thinking! And dont worry about the sex life thing here on the dis.....we all know that its sex that keeps a marriage young and fresh. And flying into DC for booty calls can be fun, ya know! :woohoo:
May the Good Lord bless you with multiples-one of each sounds good!
Then you will have your own disney :bride: and pirate:

I have no advice to offer, but I'm sending you and your husband my best wishes. I haven't been here for very long, but your posts were among the first to stand out in my mind. You seem like a wonderful person, and it's obvious you have quite the fan base. ;)

May God bless your family. :goodvibes

Just wanted to pop in and say hello! Thanks for the update.

This is great news that you have a proactive gyn. :cool1::cool1: Good luck with everything.

Tina what a nice update:goodvibes Keep up the postive energy. I am thrilelled for you that your doctor is so caring.

Good luck, Tina!

Keep us posted on the test results. I had a very hard time concieving and carrying # 2.....2 Miscarriages, and just a hard time concieving too. Turns out, it was low progesterone, and ovulation was irregular. Clomid and Progesterone is what worked for me, but even with all that, and charting, I still concieved DD on the "wrong" weekend, so who knows??? Hang in there!:grouphug:

I meant to mention before, but forgot- maybe talk to your doctor and see if DH can freeze his portion of what's needed and then you have it if he's not there, that way you can still keep on with your treatments, if that's what road you wind up going down. A friend I made on a fertility webgroup had a husband in the Navy and that was what they did so she wasn't having to start and stop treatment constantly. Not to mention, they got quite a few laughs explaining how she managed to get pregnant while he was away :rolleyes1 Baby looked just like his Daddy though, so that shut up the few naysayers when Baby arrived ;)

So sorry to hear of your struggle. I just read all of your posts and am glad your appointment went well. I wanted to offer some support. It took me about 5 1/2 years to conceive my daughter. My hubby and I went through numerous fertility treatments. We had originally started trying to conceive as my hubby was on shore duty at the time and I had wanted to have a baby while he would be home and not deployed. He is in the Navy. Unfortunately it did not quite work out that way and I ended up conceiving our daughter without him present and giving birth without him there. Don't worry I will explain that comment in a second. First of all, my primary care doctor through the military treatment facility I was at started my infertility work-up. I had kept track of my cycle through charting and knew that I was ovulating regularly. They ran bloodwork to check hormone levels. Day 3 bloodwork looks at FSH, LH, estradiol levels. FSH checks the quality of your ovarian reserve. LH is a hormone that starts low in your cycle and then when it surges is when you typically ovulate. Estradiol levels (estrogen) also start low but as a woman's follicle grows (in a follicle is an egg usually) the estrogen levels rise as this follicle matures. Anyway, they might also look at thyroid levels, prolactin, and progesterone. They normally look at progesterone on Day 21. This should be able to give a good indication if ovulation occurred and if your body is making enough of this hormone to support a potential pregnancy. Anyway after these tests then my hubby was tested. I then was referred to a GYN at the military treatment facility who did an HSG. All of these results came back normal. I did end up getting pregnant naturally but lost this one early on. My GYN then started me on Clomid and 2nd cycle I got pregnant but lost it early on. I then was lucky to get referred to a fertility specialist due to both infertility and recurrent miscarriage issues. At the time I was unexplained for both. With them I continued on Clomid then moved to injectables then tried interuterine insemination and then finally moved to IVF. I did one IVF cycle at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as they offer a discounted program for military members. I would definitely recommend them and would be happy to answer any questions you have. We ended up getting pregnant two more times one naturally and one through the IVF but both ended in miscarriage. After this last miscarriage my hubby went back to sea. I consulted with a local reproductive endocrinologist who recommended IVF with PGD (can test cells for chromosomal problems usually for women with recurrent miscarriage history). Because happy went back to sea we ended up freezing his sperm so I could use it in this IVF cycle. So this is how I got pregnant with my daughter and he wasn't even around. Right now we are starting infertility treatments again so I have redone a lot of my bloodwork. Let me know if you have any questions. I have a lot of experience with Tricare and infertility treatments specifically what they cover and do not cover. Basically they have covered all my meds and procedures associated with timed intercourse cycles. They state that they do not cover any meds or procedures associated with IVF or insemination. Just PM me if you need anything! Good luck to you!

Michele
