Five years ago we moved from Canada to Florida (Sarasota) bought land...had a house built the whole nine yards!! At the time our 2 daughters were aged 11 and 14.
Having had a condo there for quite some time......we thought "If we like our holidays here so much...why not live here?"
Well......it was not for us or our children. As much as I absolutely hate the cold and snow of a Canadian winter....I got really fed up with the intense heat month after month after month along with all the creepy crawlies! The pest control man and I were on a first name basis! I also truly missed the beautiful Autumn and crisp mornings of fall.
Our daughters were terribly unhappy in the school system and I ended up putting them in a Private School that took me 45 minutes to get to each way and cost me as much in U.S dollars as I pay here in Canadian dollars for a better all girls independant school. After 2 years we threw in the towel and cut our losses, returning to Canada. (By the way...originally we are from England, so it isn't that we cannot settle elsewhere)
We still own our condo and love our Florida visits 2-3 times a year as much as ever...but I don't want to live there again any time soon. Now, maybe when I retire I may spend Winters there..I think that may be ideal!
This is just our experience, to each his own. Many, many move and never look back! Good luck in your decsion...It's a tough one!
