Question for those in Washington DC area

Is the weekend after Thanksgiving a good time to visit? I found a great hotel rate ($99 a night at l'enfant plaza hotel), but now I am suspicious why it is so cheap! I am going to check and make sure the museums and monuments are open, but was curious if anyone has an opinion on visiting then.

Congress is not in session, it wouldn't be a time for conventions and it's likely to be cold. We've found Washington to be cheap when all the above is true. I may be wrong, but I think the monuments are open every day. Check the Smithsonian's hours on its website.

Yes, this is a good time to visit.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas you can get EXCELLENT hotel rates here. We just don't get many travelers during this time. Everything is still open. You will have a great time. It could be very cold or quite mild. Hard to tell until the day before!

I have visited at that time more than once, and have found it a great time! It may be cold, but everything is still open, but not crowded. Hope you have a great time!

I think Christmas day is the only day of closure for the Smithsonian. Should be a good time to visit. Keep up with the coffee and hot chocolate though!

You should be able to visit the national tree and many many many moons ago--when you go to the botanical garden, I believe they holiday-ize the plants there. But that was long ago.

If you don't mind the chance of being a bit cold that is a great time to be down here. The best thing is the christmas tree display on the national mall. Nothing is closed except on christmas day and crowds are low so no problems getting into museums and such.

I think it is a wonderful time to go, with Xmas decorations going up all over town. It is usually a bit cold, and it gets dark early, since it is winter. That might be the weekend the trees go up and they have the official lighting ceremony.
