It's going to be an interesting morning tomorrow when we wake up. I've been watching several talks on the Beeb's website and this has me wondering: if Scotland DOES vote to break away from the UK, what will the UK flag look like?

I know that the diagonal white bars represent Scotland but will they simply be removed if Scotland is independent of the UK? They could now have room to put the red dragon to represent Wales. What would you want the flag to look like if Scotland becomes independent?

Not really a question for Scots at all! The UK flag design wouldn't have been up to a breakaway Scotland but the remaining UK countries, anyway ...

the blue background represents the blue from the flag of St Andrew (Scotland)

the white diagonal cross serves the dual purpose of representing the cross of St Andrew and the background for the Cross of St Patrick (Northern Ireland)

so I guess we would have kept the existing flag for historic reasons, lost the blue background or designed a completely new one that maybe also includes Wales in its own right (St David's flag is a yellow cross on a black background.)

Still, we won't know now.
