Sweet neighbors - wwyd?

I WFH and the dog was crazy this morning. Figured it was because the neighbors were cutting the grass. Just checked the mail and realized they cut our front, too! And weedeated! This isn’t a case of us not caring for it - we’ve had record heat and a lot of rain this week and it literally just grew! Their’s looked the same until today.

I don’t know them since we just moved in. Just that there are no kids, married, two dogs, he’s military and I think she works from home. All this from dog banter over the fence

Do I offer to pay? Definitely cookies, but what do you think would be acceptable and well received?

I wouldnt offer to pay. Cookies sound great. Where I live it's not uncommon for a neighbor to snow plow/shavel a neighbors sidewalk or driveway when they are doing their own.

My mother and stepfather have neighbors like that throughout her neighborhood. She keeps them well stocked with cookies, homemade bundt cakes, etc.

What started out as one good deed turned into a little area of support during times of natural disasters, health struggles, etc.

My husband often mows our neighbour’s lawn or shovels their driveway, depending on the season, when he’s already out taking care of our own. If it were him, a simple, sincere “thanks very much!” now and then would mean more than enough. He’d probably feel embarrassed if they tried to give him any sort of gift.

Cookies are a nice gesture, but it could turn into a repeating event, and will you feel obligated to keep giving something in return? Around here I don’t expect anything when I do something like that for neighbors. A “thank you” is more than enough for me.

I often shovel our neighbors snow and have cut grass for neighbors as well, I would never accept money for doing it (I actually enjoy doing both) I would have no issue accepting some cookies or baked goods as a gesture of gratitude but certainly not expected. When I see them they thank me and that is more than enough

My husband cleared our neighbor's driveway one time during a bad storm and they dropped off a 12 pack of beer afterwards!

Bless him - that's lovely. But I do also think offering a little gesture, like cookies, is the decent thing to do, so I hope you just enjoy them if they come your way.

What a sweet blessing you received. I'm sure you will have an opportunity in the future to be helpful to them. This is what being neighborly is all about.

When we moved to our new home, there were a lot of downed trees that needed to be cut to firewood length. My husband was out there with his chainsaw and heard another chainsaw start up. He turned around and the guy said, "Figure you could use a little help, neighbor." We found out later he lived up the street, saw my husband cutting wood, and pulled his truck over. In my little town, everyone looks out for one another.

I'd never take cookies to someone I didn't know well -- these days they might be off sugar or gluten free or have some other dietary restriction. I did give a gas card each year at Christmas to the neighbor that plowed our driveway whenever he plowed his own,

Those are great neighbors, cookies or something that you make that is special is a great idea. I'd say make what makes you happy and share it, if they have allergies you can do something another time. You can over think this if you try, its the thought and the gesture that matter.

20+ years when we'd left the Missouri moved to California, and bolted after 2-years. When we relocated back to the PNW my wife and I agreed we'd pull a page out of living in the Missouri and deliver a plate of cookies to everyone that moved into the neighbors within eyesight. Out of the 20 homes and the number that have been sold a time or two, we only had one person decline. It's helped us stay close to our neighbors and try to maintain a sense of community.

Our neighbor doesn't work and brings our garbage/recycling cans up to the house each week.

I leave a plant in his porch a few times a year

Great neighbors are great to have. Cookies,cake a plant or just a heart felt thank you. You are very fortunate.

Sounds like you have great neighbors! On our street, people sometimes drop off cupcakes or cookies from a local bakery when someone does something kind out of the blue. Of course, you never know about allergies, but it’s the gesture that matters.

In the four years we’ve lived here, we’ve only given or received something like that twice—even though we’ve hauled in trash cans, unclogged storm drains, and picked up fallen tree limbs during or after storms for neighbors. We never expect a thank-you, but a small gesture really does go a long way.

Definitely a plate of cookies. If this turns into a usual thing, and if you happen to see them playing with their dogs in the backyard, keep an eye on what their dogs play with. If it's chew toys, or balls or big bones, maybe get a couple more now and then.

I love this! Their dogs are definitely their babies and from what I can tell, they probably chew them up fast!

Thanks everybody! I appreciate the feedback. This neighborhood is wonderful. I live right next to Ft Bragg so predominantly Army/Air Force. Kids out actually playing all the time, people speak, etc. I was a military brat and married 28 years to a now retired military man so have lived a lot of places, but this little niche I’ve found may be the best yet for me.

My DH used to clear snow from our elderly neighbors driveway. The neighbor would give DH a gift card for gas at the end of the season. I would at least send a thank you card. What nice neighbors!
