Okay, if I decide to ride M:S and find out that it's too much for me too handle, can I just close my eyes? Will that make my fear/nausea/dizziness (or whatever else I may be feeling!) disappear?
:confused3

Don't close your eyes, and keep looking forward.

If you close or eyes or move your head, you will feel the spinning and get motion sick.

There are "space sickness" bags in the capsules just in case.

Right, keep your eyes open, look straight ahead, and take deep breaths. It's usually only when someone deviates from this that they get sick. (Not to blame them, I've been tempted to close my eyes, etc. It's just not a good idea.)

Here's another ride survival tip:

When you feel the G-forces pressing down on you, flex your stomach muscles as hard as you can. It'll simulate the effects of a flight suit and help to "smooth" the ride out for you. It's best to do this when the ride is simulating a dramatic increase in speed ( I think it's at take-off and when you go around the moon ).

That said, I'd like to point out that the ride isn't something that needs to be survived. DD ( age 7 ) and I have been on it several times and we think it's a lot of fun.

:earsboy:

We rode it twice in a row and didn't feel anything bad at all. I couldn't even tell it was spinning. They warn you to keep your eyes open and looking straight ahead. I didn't take dd on it the first time because of all the things I had heard, but after we rode it, we took her on it. I thought it was a really cool ride and pretty tame.

I rode M:S with my FIL in May.

Everywhere leading up to the ride, and inside the antechamber, there are signs and announcements warning certain people away from the ride. There were four conditions, three of which were: prone to motion sickness, dislike enclosed dark spaces, and dislike spinning. Yes, yes, and YES. I still really wanted to ride, anyway. My Dad rode it last year, and I’d also read it helps to focus on an object on the monitor and NOT close your eyes, and if I didn’t already know it, Gary Sinese told it to me in the pre-flight video. All I can say is thank God for the cool air they blow across your face during the ride, because I’m sure that was the biggest factor in my not needing one of the ample supply of barf bags. I loved the ride, as did FIL. However, I felt slightly dizzy for about the next hour, and even several hours later I felt a sort-of flashback when, of all things, I rode one of the elevators in The Living Seas.

FIL had a great time making fun of me all day, and since I deserved it I let him have his fun. He was clueless, however. When I told him how the spinning of the ride messed with my inner ears, he insisted we were never spinning and said the warnings about it must have been some sort of misdirection. I asked him how he thought they produced the g-forces we felt, especially during lift off. He said it must have been some kind of special effect. Since he’s a pharmacist and I have a lot of chemistry classes under my belt, I tried explaining to him that in the ride we were in a giant centrifuge and that our backs were being pressed against the bottom of the test tube, but he didn’t buy it.

Even though I ALMOST felt sick the whole time, I loved the ride and will do it again the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Our crew rode Mission Space a couple of months ago. We had a party of 5, my wife and I (50) and 3 boys (17,17,19). My wife would not ride it based on previous ride a year or so ago. She swore never to go on that again. I have no problems at all with it. One of the 17 year old's had zero problems and loved it, the other 17 yr old and 19 year old both got very queasy and dizzy. One broke out into a sweat and had to sit down for 5-10 min then he recovered, the other was 'out of it' for a couple of hours feeling queasy and slightly dizzy.

My theory is either you have a sensitivity to motion sickness or you don't. Until you try something like this you don't know. If you get queasy in a boat or other motion based event you probably should sit it out, if you don't, give it a whirl! Only way to know is to try it!

Have fun!

i tend to get really claustrophobic and am prone to panic attacks in those situation so it was with HUGE hesitation that i went on M:S. Granted I'm not worried about motion sickness..but panic attacks are probably worse.

#1 DO NOT CLOSE YOUR EYES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. don't look up, don't look down. don't look left. don't look right. Just look at at the screen.

During the ride, like right after the door closed! i was starting to sweat. But what really helped me was tapping my foot in a nice, slow even rythm and concentrating on my breathing. Nice, slllloooooowwwwww deeeeeeeeppppp breaths...in through the nose and out through the mouth...

Can't tell you how great this worked. I enjoyed the ride and it was over way too quickly. Felt a little "shaky" afterwards, but that wore off in like 10 minutes or so.

HAVE FUN!!!

I rode it last year, and to tell you the truth, I thought I was gonna be sick right there on the ride. I was like, "Oh my god, I have to get off this cant they turn it off?". My BF told me to stop saying that cuz he was getting sick too and by me talking about it was making him sicker! So I closed my eyes, and I assure you, it's probably the worst thing you can do...I would find something sturdy that doesnt move to focus on until it's over...that feeling, in actuality, doesnt last long. But, in my opinion, it's not even worth the sickness, it's not that great of a ride (in case you dont wanna risk it)...I'm going back next week and will not be wasting 2 hours of my Disney time waiting on line for a ride where all it does is make me sick!

:wizard: :pug:

There isn't enough money to get me back on this ride....just be careful and don't let it ruin the rest of your day like I did. As I've said on here before, the good news is that I made it over to France before I just finally had to throw up! Don't know if it was MS or the idea of being in France - our supportive allies ;)

Glad I did it once, but I will not be doing it again. If the ride was any longer I would have been sick even though I took anti-nausea pills before hand. I'm sure glad that we didn't have to wait to get on this ride.

DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES!!! Look straight ahead and take slow, deep breaths. Our whole family rode 3 or 4 times. What freaks you out is all the warnings before hand about sickness...sort of makes you feel motion sick just hearing someone just talking about it so much. We could never perceive spinning. The last time I rode it, I THOUGHT about spinning while I was on the ride and I couldn't perceive it.

missypie

Or reading all the threads on it... :rotfl:
I must admit im a little nervous about riding this ride..dh says its similar to the gravitron rides.. never rode them either. Im ok on roller coasters and even will 'black out' in the loops if it has em, but not every time... :confused3
But I want to ride the ride instead of always wonder about it...

though i'll never go on it again..once was enough...the only way to find out is to go on it for yourself...just do it, get it over with and grab yourself an adult beverage immediately afterwards (if you're over 21...if not, a mickey premium bar will work too!) :cool1:

I've been on it twice and never felt sick. KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN or it will wreak havoc on your system. I had a major case of the butterflies before riding but once you let go and realise how amazing what you are experiencing is...you should do fine!

I think this ride is awesome. However, I have a stomach of cast iron. Like everyone here says, don't close your eyes and keep your head perfectly still against the head rest. If the simulation of movement from looking at the video screen makes you queasy, maybe just focus on one of the controls next to the screen, so you're still looking forward.

If you're still nervous, just remember - it's over after only a few minutes, and you never have to ride it again! But I love this ride, so hopefully you will too.
