Question for job hunters?

Gal-pal of mine who has an IT degree and over 21 years experience was laid off. She’s been job-hunting for a good 3 months now and tells me that she’s had nothing but phone interviews.

For those of you looking for jobs. Is this something you encountered a lot? Phone interviews rather then live interviews? Seems to me it doesn’t allow for a prospective employer to see the whole package. :confused3

We will do phone interviews to see if we want to waste everyone's time on setting up an in-person interview.

I have been on an interview board where the candidate answered yes and no to every single question. Could not give an example of anything even when we tried to help him come up with some. If we had some a phone interview in this case we wouldn't have wasted 2 hours for 4 people plus the candidate.

I think phone interviews are fairly common in that field. I remember my ex (who's in computer programming) having lots of phone interviews when he was looking for a job.

I don't think it's odd at all. With the number of people who are currently unemployed, those companies that are hiring are seeing an unbelievable number of resumes. They're using phone interviews to screen out those who look good on paper, but maybe don't have exactly what is needed for the position available. You can find out quite a bit over the phone...and then time isn't wasted interviewing.

She should be glad she's getting the phone interviews. At least her resume is drawing attention. Many people have been laid off for a much longer period of time w/o any kind of response from prospective employers.

Yes, hubby has only had a handful of phone interviews. With so many people looking for jobs, most places are doing phone interviews first to save time and money by narrowing down the field of candidates.

When I was looking for a job back in October I had a potential employer call me to do a phone interview. I was still employed so I went out to my car during my lunch break to do my phone interview (which felt a little uncomfortable). I then had to come in the office for a 2 hour interview with the HR manager and the managing partner (it's a law firm). Then I had to come back for a 6 hour interview that was me being interviewed one on one by every single person that works here. I got the job but it was such a process! Especially for a non-management type of position.

I despise phone interviews. It makes me very nervous and it's hard to read the person on the phone.

That what she was saying too. But I guess it's just a sign of the times.

Definitely, I was responsible for hiring my replacement and from the people that came in a phone interview could've saved a lot of time! But it's much worse, when you're on the other side, then a one-on-one interview IMHO. But I am grateful for the opportunity to interview at all!

My DH is in IT sales and he has had multiple phone interviews. The latest job was two or three phone interviews and then a face to face meeting which was more just to make sure he didn't have two heads or something. It lasted less than 30 minutes.
