I had my gallbladder out about 5 months ago, and since then I've put on about 8 pounds. My diet hasn't changed much, and I'm not a high-fat eater.
I just got over the "run to the bathroom 20 minutes after I eat" few months, and now this!!
Has anyone that had their gallbladder taken out had similar experiences? :confused3

thanks!

Had mine out about 10 years ago and have not had the weight problem. It wasn't until the last 2 years that I've had the "gotta run to the bathroom right now" thing. Immodium has become my best friend. I never go anywhere w/o it. If I really really eat well, I don't need it. But throw in a doughnut or something "heavy" to eat and I'm in trouble.

There's lots of info flying around on the web, but I think talking to your dr. would be your best bet. I have 4 close friends who has also had theirs out, and as far as gaining weight they now have "belly fat". You have to wonder if that would have happened to them regardless of the surgery. Who knows. I don't think there has ever been any "big money" to be had on this issue so no real studies have been done. I'd love to read one good study that has been done to track the side effects of having a gallbladder removed.

I had my gallbladder removed last May. I did not gain any weight.

I think I had my first "incident" in June while eating lobster and dunking it ever so lightly in butter......OKAY OKAY drowning it in butter...ugh...what a night.. .

Anyway, I am thinking I should get myself checked out but was not aware of the "weight gain" issues and what exactly do you mean..."gotta run to the bathroom after I eat" business... :confused3

When I had my gallbladder out I lost over 40 pounds - mainly because it was so totally botched that I had a tube out of my liver and couldn't eat because of horrible nausea for about 3 months. I've pretty much kept it off for the past five years.

I had mine out last November. My doctor told me that I'd need to follow a low fat diet for the rest of my life to avoid these issues (weight gain, and "urgent" bathroom trips). I've lost 25 pounds (which I was having trouble losing anyway) and especially at lunch when I bring a frozen dinner to work it must be under 10g of fat or I have problems. There are times when I want mexican food and I take proper precautions for the aftereffects, so I do treat myself to the things which will cause issues but they are no longer frequently in my diet

I had my gallbladder out 4ish years ago, I think...

I have lots of problems...
Acid Reflux, running to bathroom, I didn't have weight gain from GB surgery but from quitting smoking.

Right now I have to quit caffeine and I HATE THAT.

If I eat right, exercise and get proper sleep I do real well.:lmao:

I had mine removed about 8 years ago and I haven't experienced any problems.

I have gained a few pounds in the past year or two but believe me, it isn't due to the removed gallbladder. It's due to me being in my late 30's and I can't eat the junk like I used to :rotfl:

I had my gallbladder out about 12 years ago and also never experienced any problems.

Any weight gain was purely my own fault

I didn't have the running problem and I eat whatever I want, whenever I want to.

Mine came out last November and I don't think I've had any weight gain related to that. I did gain some weight but it was because of other stuff going on in my life. Thankfully some is starting to come off now.

But I have the must run to the bathroom issues.

I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago and have also put on weight since but i think that was more over eating, but i found i couldnt tolerate high fat foods etc cheese in any amount but when i have too fatty a food then i have lots of urgent bathroom visits and a lot of pain (acid reflux i guess.) but now i have decided to control my diet again low fat foods etc cos i had a cholesterol test done and was horrified by the result . 7.1 so that needs to come down drastically.

9 weeks and 3 days to we fly to orlando from scotland

Yes, that was my experience. I gained about 8 pounds and I didn't think much of it. I had had such terrible stomach pain before finding out what the problem was I assumed I was just eating more 'cause I felt better and that everything would even out. The weight stayed.....

I had terrible gas, bloating, and diarrhea right away after the surgery. It was uncomfortable and embarrassing. I went back to my doctor and he said he didn't know what the problem was and had never had another patient experience this. He told me to take over-the-counter bulking products (such as Metamucil) and that just made it worse.

Then, after a few weeks passed, he called me and asked me to come back to his office. He had called other doctors and surgeons he knew and they had had a few patients like me. He was told to put me on a very small amount of Questran everyday. It is a prescription cholesterol medication in powder form. (It actually looks just like a large can of powdered baby formula.) He said it is rare but a few patients cannot handle the digestion of fats the same after their gall bladder removal and the Questran helps by taking the fats past the digestion process and right to the bowel. I have been taking 1/8 teaspoon dissolved in a small amount of fluid for years now.

There are still some foods that I don't digest well, for example corn, but I take vitamins every day and eat what I want to. It may take a little while, but you will probably even out and things will get better. :goodvibes

I had my GB out 3 years ago. i have not had the weight gain issues. I do have the gotta run to potty right now issue every once and while--usually if I eat a hamburger and French Fries--I can eat one or the other, but not both in the same sitting.

mtblujeans--

My MIL had to use the Questran after her GB was removed as well. A funny story. She and FIL were visiting us for a week. The twins were about 6 weeks old. DH went to make a bottle--he could not figure out why it was not mixing or smelling right. He went to give it to one of the babies but mentioned about the formula being off. I looked at the bottle and the milk looked yellow. MIL was sitting right there and started laughing !! DH used the Questran instead of the formula!! MIL decided that her container needed to be kept in her room. The container was the exact size and shape if our powdered formula.

I don't know why they don't do something about that packaging! I used to keep my Questran in the kitchen until the babies came along and then decided it need to go in the bathroom with the vitamins. Good thing it is yellow when mixed so the difference is obvious!! But, it is so gritty in texture....I am not sure you could actually get a child to drink it! ;)

My dearly beloved gallbladder went to its final rest twenty-four years ago. (They weren't sure what it was at first, because I wasn't 40 and female :rotfl: )
Anyway, didn't have a single problem after. Didn't have a single problem before, either, for that matter; just one really painful night, and bang, here you go, here's your jar of 32 gallstones, each an inch in diameter. :scared1:

So many of us had had their gallbladders out!! I never knew it was so common. I'm going to do some research on Questran--I've never heard of it. Is it prescription or herbal?? I'm a little over 5 feet tall, and 8 pounds really makes a difference on a small framed person.
thanks everyone!!

It is prescription. We had to experiment with it to find the right dosage. If too much is taken, it makes you constipated.

I had my gallbladder out 5 years ago, I don't think I had any problems within the first year, maybe 2 years, but then I began with the gotta run to the bathroom, but with stomach pains accompanying. It only bothers me for a couple of months out of the year, I don't know why, I don't even know if it's from my GB, but that never crossed my mind. I never even went to my Dr. for it, but the next time it acts up I will. When it does bother me, it's dairy, I can't have cereal , pancakes, or anything heavy in the morning, after about 12 or 1 o'clock i'm ok. I think that is so weird :confused3 But for some reason I never thought it could be from my gallbladder. Hey you learn something everyday.
No weight issues though. My mother also had her gallbladder out about 20 years ago. She definately has the gotta run to the bathroom issues.

I had mine out 6 years ago. I had a horrible recovery, but didn't have weight gain or bathroom issues.

Weight gain out of nowhere could be due to other reasons.
