So... I had an issue this past November with a member of staff in the Cove Café, and to make a slightly painful story short, I'm just curious as to anyone having been recently on the Dream, noticed any new signage or had any issues going into the Café? Like say, if you were only wearing a bathing suit top and shorts?

If anyone would like the back story to why I ask, I'll offer it, but like I said.... It's a little on the painful side for me... and The only time I've ever experienced UnDisneyLike behavior.

Thanks guys!

I have never tried to go in just in my bathing suit top. I usually put on my cover up which looks like a sun dress or I just order from the deck guys who will run and go get the drink from the cover for you.

Well, I was passing through from being on deck in the sun, through the cove, and then to my room. All I wanted was the toblerone martini, and I was in a bikini top and shorts, because that is all I had with me. It's right next to a pool! It shouldn't be that hard of a concept that of course people are going to go in to grab something. What is the real difference to my outfit versus those "cover-ups" that barely cover anything?

I'm neither a big or thin girl... But this man made me feel like the ugliest person alive. I expect that from young rude bullies.... But not from a man in his 30s. I'm normally a strong-willed person but he made me cry, and that's not ok. He could have DEFF said what he did to me better, but he chose not to.

I wasn't trying to pass any judgement. I was just saying I had never tried to go in, in just my bathing suit. I do always carry my cover up just in case I need to pop in somewhere on my way back to the room simply because I thought outside of eye scream and the quick service location in the family pool the rest of the ship followed the cruise casual dress code. I'm not sure if that is set in stone as a rule or not just what I always did.

Sorry a CM made you feel terrible. I hope you reported him to Guest Services and asked them what the policy is.

I don't know that there's any specific signage that says that. But, IMO, since the cafe serves food, I'd think the policy would be the same as the other indoor food service locations that require "no swimwear".

What did he say?

I talked to the officer in charge of dining staff, and He said that the CM was completely out of line and in the wrong. Because there isn't a policy. And by your logic PrincessShmoo, you shouldn't be able to grab food from the buffet or even from like maters grill/ice cream.

Mun, Ok. So this is how it went: I had just come down from deck 13, and I wanted to try the toblerone martini, and all I had on was a Black Bikini Top, and a pair of shorts (covering my bottom and all the important things). I walked in, and while there were other people (yes casually dressed, one IN a coverup) he turned to me, not even remotely nicely and said, "Do you have something to put on?" (No hello no sorry nothing.) And I responded with, "No, I do not. It's in my room." "Well you have to leave. You can't be in here." Just like that.

Now, maybe I'm being sensitive, but I've been having weight issues as of late, and although I know I don't look bad, it still hurt that he was so course and rude.

The poolside food locations are different - they are actually open to the pool area. Getting food to go from those locations you can be in swimwear.

The buffet, as far as I know, also doesn't allow dining in swimwear (unless covered), just like the dining rooms.

OP, I do think you are being a little sensitive. I'm not sure what type of cover up someone else was wearing but you were asked if you had a cover up to put on. You said no, so they said you have to leave. They could have said sorry policy says you need a cover up or whatever but I don't think they were making it about your weight or appearance or anything. Perhaps this CM usually worked at locations where swimwear is not appropriate with out a cover up such as the bars and adult lounges.

Since the head of dinning said that is not the policy and apologized we can only hope that CM was trained better. I'm not sure what else can be done. I do feel bad that you feel like this was more than it was and hope you come to realize it doesn't appear this has anything to do with you weight or appearance but the fact you were in a bathing suit top and shorts bottoms.

I honestly don't find anything rude in what he said. He simply asked if you had coverup, then said you had to leave since you did not. Nothing about weight or appearances of anything.

sorry you felt bad but he didn't do anything wrong. The CM you complained to of course will say you are in the right.

sorry Thehippie524, i don't see anything wrong in what he said either. of course i did not hear his tone so maybe there was something there that is not coming across. i'd be surprised but who knows.

having said that, i have seen men in there without shirts on and they were not asked to leave. maybe they were just lucky in that they did not get a cm that wanted to push the issue. Shmoo is right, there are restrictions for the food places that are indoors and being covered is one of them.

I've never seen anybody in there on any of the ships in just a swimsuit or a swimsuit top and shorts. Never. In 17 cruises.

I'm wondering if the objection is more to the way he said it rather than to exactly what he said. I wouldn't have too much objection to the words themselves but I did not hear the guy say it.

It wasn't a CM. It was an officer. And come to find out they actually had a ship-wide meeting about it. Because all I wanted to know from the officer was if I was in the wrong on going in there dresses the way I was. Which I was told I WAS NOT.

And to say they I'm being too sensitive because he "probably didn't come across as rude" well he did. Take a snobby highschool girl type of attitude and apply it.

One more thing.... How can you say that it's not rude, when they DON'T in fact turn men away being shirtless? That's not right.

Oh.
And the INTENT of this post was to see if there was any signage or anything as of recently. No? Then fine, understandable. Yes? please post then.

And, it may be enclosed, but the cases are enclosed, and it's not a sanitary issue as they are not prepared there.

Are you disturbed by what he said to you, the way he said it, or by the fact that they might not let people into the Cove in a bathing suit?

I've never seen a shirtless guy in there either come to think of it.

I haven't seen ladies without coverups nor men with shirts off in there either, but we all know that personal anecdotes are just that. I'm not sure what the official rule is... and it sounds like the officer isn't quite sure either if all he said to you was that there ISN'T a policy. As PrincessShmoo said it would make sense on paper that it would follow the same rules are the other "indoor" places vs. the open bays, but I haven't seen a sign saying that. They have cloth chairs and carpet in there too which would be a pain to keep dry - and even more of a pain for the clothed person who came and sat there next (been there at pool bars but that was my own fault for not thinking!) Coverups don't cover much but they do make it so people dry off a little more than they would if they were just in bathing suits alone.

OP, I'm sorry the CM in there made you feel shameful and even more sorry he made you cry. You said you are having issues with your own weight which can really make words sting where they otherwise mightn't have. Talking to that officer was the single best thing you could have done. FWIW I have also found some of the workers in there a little... snooty I guess? as well, but laugh it off as a barista thing.

I think they are trying to create an atmosphere of a nice coffee shop. A person wouldn't go to Starbucks in a swimsuit. I know it is right next to the pool, I get it. But putting on a cover isn't really all that difficult. Heck, we don't roam in any other location on the ship without a cover. You wouldn't go to one of the inside bars like that so I don't see it any different in Cove Cafe. One needs to give respect to get it.
