Question dealing with Mardi Gras and Presidents Day..

We are planning a trip for Feb of 2013. The issue or question I am having is that I know Presidents week is very busy. We do not want to go then. We are from New Orleans and want to take advantage of being off then. When do the crowds start to pick up for Presidents week? The date of Mardi Gras is Feb. 12th, Presidents Day is the 18th. I am thinking we should go the 9th-15th to avoid the crowds, is that right?
Thanks in advance for all the help. We have only gone to Disney one other time and that was the week after Thanksgiving.

The crowds pick up the weekend right before President's day. If it is the 19th, then the crowds would start on Sat the 17th.

No, they do not always happen the same week.

I just checked and it looks like President's day in 2012 is Monday, February 20. That means crowds will start on Saturday, Feb. 18 and run all week. Schools up here in the northeast are off all week.

We went year before last during Mardi Gras week and it was much more crowded that I ever expected. Seemed like the entire state of Louisiana was there.

LOL...It does seem that way...I know I get insanely jealous when all of my friends start posting about leaving for their trips when we are going to parades here in NOLA. But atleast we only have one more year of that to bear then we will be making our own post...ONLY a year to wait LOL

When Pres week coincides with Mardi Gras, the crowds are truly huge, as they will be this year. But 2013 they will not coincide.
Going the 9th to the 15th that year will be better than the following week, but keep in mind that Mardi Gras will supply crowds all by itself...so don't expect the parks to be the typical mid winter empty. It will be manageable, but you'll still have lots of other schools out and visiting with you!

No, It's deteremined by when Easter falls each year. Find Easter on your calendar count back 40 days and you should see Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday. The Mardi Gras Season typically lasts for 2 weeks+ (in Mobile anyway) ending on Fat Tuesday.

Fat Tuesday 2012 is February 21st.

We've been during President's Day Week twice, once when it was the same week as Mardi Gras (2010) and once when it was not (2008). Honestly I didn't notice a difference, it was very busy both weeks.

I think it's a matter of magnitude, President's Week is a vacation week for most of the Northeast States as opposed to a holiday for one State with a relatively small population in comparison. Yes we did notice a lot of people with New Orleans Saints and LSU gear but honestly I noticed a lot more people sporting Red Sox/Patriots and Yankees/Mets/Giants/Jets apparel.

On a crowded bus heading back to our resort after fireworks at MK I heard one gentleman say "This is like the Green Line at Kenmore Square after a Sox game"

Mardi Gras is not the 12th. It's the 21st. With President's Day on the 20th, and the Princess Half Marathon that weekend, I would expect it to be more crowded than usual.

Never mind... I'm thinking of 2012, not 2013. Sorry!

In 2012, some schools are closed Feb 20-22 and some are closed the whole week, Feb 20-24. It depends on the district.
