Question about WDW shopping and Disney Visa discounts

My wife and I have been Disney Visa cardholders for about 5 years now, so we have had it on our last 2 trips, and will use it again on our upcoming trip, along with the Disney Reward dollars saved up (currently at $416) but I had a question about something that came up last trip, but not every time.

There were times I wanted to split my payment while souvenir shopping, like use the DRD/Disney Visa for part of the payment, and use cash or another card for the remainder. As I was always willing to put at least $50 on the DRD/Disney Visa, sometimes I got the 10% discount, and sometimes I was told 100% of the purchase had to be on either the DRD/Disney Visa, so my question is, what is the proper rule, and if I can split payments, how do I point that out to the cast member who might not know it?

The only thing I've ever read is that the Disney Visa card must be used; I don't believe I've read whether or not the transaction can be split using multiple payment methods. It doesn't surprise me the whole transaction must be paid for with the Disney Visa card or the Rewards Redemption Card. They want the transaction through Chase and aren't likely to give you the discount for the full purchase when using a different card. Consider it pixie dust for the times you were allowed to split the payment. This is the small print from the website, which doesn't actually clarify if the transaction can be split:
A $50 minimum pre-tax single transaction merchandise purchase is required to receive discount. Must use your valid Disney Visa Card and/or Disney Rewards Redemption Card as payment form and mention this offer.

My recommendation is to split your purchase. Ring up the items you want with the discount and are willing to put on the Disney Visa or Redemption Card. Then make a separate transaction the items you want charged to a different card; just realize it won't receive the discount.

Enjoy your vacation!

I had to put the entire purchase on the card to get the discount. A couple years ago my Mother in Law had given me $50 cash to put toward a Disney Dooney I really wanted. Even though the total was nearly $300, they wouldn't let me pay $50 cash and put the rest on the card and still get the discount.

Do you have to request the retail/dining discount when you pay with your Disney card or does it come off automatically?
