Question about UPS and signing for pks.

If a signature is required for delivery and no one is home will they automatically try to deliver to a neighbor? What if I leave a note on my door, will they take it to a neighbor?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think their procedure is to leave you a sticky-note on your door indicating that they attempted to deliver your package and give you a couple options for delivery, either sign their note (which works as if you were there to receive it), pick it up at a distribution center or be there for redelivery. I don't think they're allowed to deliver it to a neighbor, even if you leave them a note asking them to do so.

In most if not all cases the neighbor option went out the door when online tracking became available. There might be serurity concerns these days as well.

In some rural areas there may be people who have an agrement with their local driver. We have talked to ours and agreed on some things given the number of packages we receive.

I've had some issues with UPS deliveries in the past and found that there really is no consistency. If the package requires a signature, I've been told that I either have to be there, pick it up at a distribution center, or have a neighbor sign for it.

Since they only deliver between 9 am and 6 pm and I'm not home those hours, this became an issue.

After repeat calls to let them know that this policy stinks and that I don't have time to drive the 45 minutes to the nearest distribution center, it now appears that they just leave most of my things for me without requiring a signature or they try to deliver as late in the day as possible since my husband is usually home by 5:00 pm.

I have put notes on my door instructing them to leave them on the step, and to deliver to our rental office. They have always done what I asked.

Stated policy is that they'll make three redelivery attempts. Local delivery offices may have their own alternatives that they may make available.

mine never leave anything with the neighbors. Most of my packages don't require a signature anymore, I spoke with my UPS driver and he said there are certain areas that are "mandatory signature" as are apartment buildings, but my neighborhood and most of my town are considered "safe". The cost of replacing a certain percentage of packages is figured into their operating expenses and is still cheaper than labor costs for the extra time waiting for a signature requires.

If it's an express delivery, they will leave a sticky that you can either sign and let them leave it the next day, or go pick it up yourself, which is a PITA. The only exception we have to this is when we get wine delivered. That has to be an inperson signature to ensure the recipient is 21 or over. Not that they haven't bent that rule a time or two either...

Thanks everyone. Our plans fell through so we're home to get the package now. DH was so anxious to get the package that he was going to come home from work to wait.
