I was about to buy 9 day park hoppers for my family on undercovertourist.com, with plans to upgrade the tickets to annual passes during our trip in June. (Upgrading during the middle of our trip allows me to get two vacations since we'll vacation the same week in 2018.) I'm anticipating a ticket price increase between now and my trip. However, I just read the below on touringplans.com and am wondering if I'll have to pay the difference between my what I pay for my 9 day hoppers and the current selling price for my 9 day hoppers, plus the difference for the annual pass. Am I better off just buying my hoppers directly from Disney instead? This is the first I've heard of this potential 3rd party ticket seller penalty after a price increase. Any insight is appreciated.

Upgrading Third-Party Tickets After A Disney Price Hike
In March 2014, Disney changed its policy for upgrading third-party tickets purchased prior to a Disney price increase. If, after Disney raises its ticket prices, you want to upgrade a ticket purchased before the increase, you must first pay the difference between what you paid for your ticket and Disney's current price for that same ticket. Once you do that, you'll pay the current price for whatever upgrade you want.

Example: You buy a 5-day base ticket from the Official Ticket Center for $290, saving around $30 off Disney's gate price of $320. After you buy it, Disney raises its price for that ticket another $20, to $340. If you later want to upgrade your 5-day ticket to a 7-day ticket, you'll first pay $50 - the difference between what you paid Official Ticket Center for the ticket ($290) and Disney's current price for the ticket ($340). Then on top of that you'll also pay whatever is the current incremental difference between the 5- and 7-day tickets at Disney's gate prices.

It's unclear whether Disney will apply this logic to their own tickets. So far we've only heard it applies to third-party tickets purchased before a price increase.

Just to clarify, when you upgrade a MYW ticket to an annual pass, the AP expiration date corresponds to the day you first used the MYW ticket, not the day you upgraded to the AP. Some CMs don't always do it correctly and you can luck into an expiration date of your upgrade date, but that isn't how the system is supposed to work.

I didn't realize this. Thanks for the clarification.

You're better off purchasing from a third party than directly from Disney. Disney will only give you credit for the price you paid. Third party tickets are bridged to the current gate price.

True! I forgot about that. Too many details to keep track of sometimes. Thank you.

Now I'm trying to do the math with respect to annual pass vs. the ability to add on to your ticket for tickets purchased after tomorrow.

Either way, if you buy from a third party reseller, you will be saving money if you do any kind of upgrade.
