Someone mentioned to me that Tylenol is actually bad for you. That it doesn't really work and causes problems. Honestly I don't really buy that right now but if someone can show me any proof to support this I would really appreciate it. I can't find anything to support that other than people who abuse it. TIA.

the long time use of large amounts of tylenol can be harmful to your liver.

you can actually kill yourself with a tylenol overdose (thus in the ER we check tylenol levels in the blood on all of our mentally ill/suicidal patients).

but saying the occassional use of tylenol in correct doses is harmful is just hogwash.

just my 2 cents. :)

Thank you. This person was telling me that it doesn't actually do anything for the inflamtion and it is bad for you.

There is also an increased risk of liver problems in people who drink frequently and take Tylenol.

I believe that the ibrofen and naproxen (Advil and Aleve) can also cause liver damage with long-term and high dosage use. But maybe someone can correct me on that?

But as ERMama said, occasional use with correct dosages is fine.

ETA: Ibrofen does work on inflamation so take that if that's your issue.

As the wife of a pharmacist and an RN it is only trully dangerous of you 1) take an overdose or more then the recommended dosage 2) you are already suffering from liver issues and taking tylenol or 3) drinking alcohol and abusing tylenol. As a pp said we do screen pts for tylenol ods when they come in with questionable mental status/suicide ideations.

Thanks for all the info. I believe they were saying that it doesn't allow your body to get rid of the toxins that are causing the problem. I don't really know more than that and I have never heard of that.

your liver is the 'de-toxifier' in your body, drugs are processed through your liver & excreted by the kidneys. Occasional Tylenol use is safe, it is not an anti-inflammatory, it is a pain reliever & anti-pyretic (fever reducer)- Advil is an anti-inflammatory, pain reliever & anti-pyretic medication.

...what about the daily use of Tylenol PM? at the recommended dose? I have gotten conflicting reports...thanks.

I don't know about that, but I do believe that the pain relievers/anti-inflammatories are very much NOT good for us. Our bodies tend to be very good at decreasing inflammation if we let them, but most people I know want to just pop a pill and not think about it.

My friend with liver damage (through no fault of her own) can't take it ever. She also can't drink. She can't take Aleve either (nor can I) do to naproxen poisoning...starts shutting down her system. With me it just caused me to swell, caused heart rate problems and skipped beats and started on an ulcer...just a heart attack and stroke were left on the list of symptoms for me!

If you believe in non western medicine, you want to DEtox, not put more drugs into you. So figure out ways to do that. Plenty of resources out there.

Tylenol always scared me, then I got pregnant and everyone said not to take Ibuprofen (which is silly, it's only a short time towards the end of pregnancy where the issue can happen, not in earlier pregnancy), and I had really bad back pains from how big "the girls" got. I should have taken my sorry behind to my chiropractor and acupuncturist, but I was thinking we were broke and decided to use the western medicine instead, and wound up with a LOVELY case of tylenol induced asthma. Thought it was pregnancy induced until I went a'googling and found connections.

Figure out what you believe in and how you want to live your life, and go from there. For me, I like homeopathic arnica to reduce any pain or swelling I can get to go down with ice or epsom salts.

Good luck!
