Hello! I'd like to know people's opinions on how scary the haunted house is. (my daughter is 7) and what exactly is the Pirates of the Caribbean? A Ride? Thanks!
Dawn

The Haunted Mansion isn't really scary. I'd say the scariest part are little things that jump out at you, etc. Nothing that a 7-year old couldn't handle in most cases. Pirates of the Caribbean is a ride. You sit in boats and float through different scenes. Be prepared for long lines for that one though since they've just recently unveiled the new animatronics, etc from the movie :)

It depends on how much your daughter can tolerate. Of course to adults, the Haunted Mansion seems tame but to a 7 year old it could be another story :faint: . I remember when my son was 6, he was terrified of it :scared1: . He was fine after he finally got on it and he did end up conquering his fears :darth: . The ride is dark, but you can see at all times and the music :music: is fun :) . You are in a car

that rides on a track and nothing comes out to touch you or anything like that :woohoo: . What may be a good idea  is to get the music from the ride to famialize you daughter with the songs, she may be more comfortable hearing music she knows :music: . Disney has alot of park cd's or you may be able to download it on the internet :surfweb: . Pirates of the Carribean pirate: isn't scary at all but you are in a boat :boat: and in the beginning of the ride there is a small drop, nothing much. Other then that there's alot of music and lifelike audio-amniotronic figures (I'm sure I spelled that wrong)!

I suggest you look at some websites to get your child familiar with the rides. The sounds , the creatures and make sure you make it clear that it's pretty dark for most of both these rides!

Here's a few sites you might want to check out.

Also, check out hauntedmansion.info...I love that website, it shows pictures of EVERYTHING under regular light and sort of gives away how they did it. Sure, it takes away some of the magic, but maybe it would reduce the scare factor for a child :)

As a kid, Haunted Mansion was and remains today, the only "haunted house" I will go in. I'm sure I was a little scared at first, but as a little girl, I loved the ballroom scene and the hitchhiking ghosts at the end. I'm sure my parents told me about it beforehand so I wouldn't get freaked out, but I'm still too chicken to do ToT, and I love HM!

Something I've seen other parents do, too, is to have a glow necklace or glow bracelet for their child. It's not so bright that it annoys other guests on the ride, but it's bright enough that it gives a sense of security to the child. Personally, I love glow necklaces, so I think it's a good idea (but, as with everything, your milage may vary).

Good luck!

I think it all depends on the child and how easily frightened he/she is. My three year old loved both those rides. The Haunted Mansion was his favorite ride in all of Disney! But he loves Scooby Doo and slightly scary stuff, so it's in his personality to like spooky things. I think most 7 year olds can do both rides no problem.

I went when I was 6 and I was SCARED TO DEATH OF BOTH OF THEM. In the haunted mansion the only thing I can remember is turning around to see the man hanging from the ceiling and the rest of the ride I hugged my dad like no other!

The pirates scared me the first time I rode it. My mom actually loves this story! Anyway, the first time I was attached to my dad like a leech, but then at the end of the day I got to choose one more ride to ride and I chose Pirates. My mom was shocked, but we went and I loved it!

Whe nI was 6 haunted mansion was not scary to me at all. My DD 6 is scared of POTC. She has nochoice because it is a family ride and she is going on it with us. She can be a baby sometimes. :goodvibes

Baloo, I love that video. I didn't even know it existed. Very entertaining to watch Johnny Depp stare himself square in the eye and be afraid to touch him.

My four year old rode The Haunted Mansion last year when she was three and it was one of her favorite rides. We took my Best Friend's daughter in with us, and she was the same age as my daughter, and she was terrified. I guess it just depends on the kid!

It depends on the child. I have seen young kids terrified, others laughing away. It can certainly be frightening to a child.

My DD11 and DS7 were both a little scared of HM. Luckily, I sat in the middle in the doombuggy, and they buried their heads in my side. DD was only scared when the characters jumped out in the graveyard scene. Luckily, you can hear the compressed air sound from the hydraulics (?) and can anticipate where the next one will be. Definately watch the videos in the links above. Also, my son was TERRIFIED of It's tough to be a bug. He hated the spiders that are suspended from the ceiling and the blasts of air to your face. I guess the best answer is to know your child, and what they will tolerate.

We went to WDW 2 years ago and my DD was 3 1/2 and she thought Haunted Mansion was pretty cool. I was nervous about taking her on it because she is not the bravest. But she really liked it. :sunny:

The biggest thing about both rides is that they're in the dark--my younger sister (age 8) still doesn't like Haunted Mansion (or Space Mountain, or RRC)--she'll ride it, but she won't like it. POTC she likes better because she thinks it's funny--and she loves the movies. :) By the same contrast, when my other sister (18), and I (21) were that age, we loved it and weren't afraid at all! I think it really depends on whether or not your child can handle a ride that mostly/completely in the dark.

I rode Pirates when I was 7 and I thought it was FACINATING! although they have re-done some of the features and it is a bit more scary then it was WAY back then! :rolleyes1 ...they've brought in some things from "Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest" like Davey Jones etc. which may freak out a small child :teeth: Again, it depends on how your 7 year old handles "scary". We all have our limits...my 13 year old daughter has a very low threshold on "scary". She LOVES PIRATES but HATES haunted mansion! can't even get her to go on it! (she rode it once)

Again, it'd probably be for the best if you go on-line and let her look at some of the sights for both rides. Whatever you decide, have fun on your next trip and hopefully she'll try each ride at least once.

Yo Ho! pirate:

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the HM ride somehow associated with The Haunted Mansion movie with Eddie Murphy?

I should know the answer, but at 35 years old I'm still too chicken to go in the HM (long story...got lost in a haunted house as a child...scarred me for life!) but my DD8 (who's also a big chicken) wants to ride it in September! :sad2:

The movie was inspired by the ride....
