Question about transfers

My question is this.. whats the difference between a transfer and a rental of points to a DVC member. How are the points transfered into the member account or is a reservation preferable?
Do all points work if there is a villa available on a date?

There is no such thing as "renting points" - that is a misnomer since you can only rent a reservation made using your points. Our Rent/Trade Board uses "Points for Rent" as a title only because it is easily understood since points can only be used to make reservations, but points are useless to anyone except the member who controls the points in their account. Points, as defined by DVC, have no real value by themselves.

A transfer is done thru MS where one member transfers a specific number of points into another member's account. Ince completed (it is an irreversible transaction), the transferree now has complete control of those points and can use them as they wish. The transferror no longer has any control or responsibility for the use off those points. The transferred points will retain their original Use Year and Home Resort status. They may not be borrowed, but may be banked after the transfer. Members are allowed one transfer per year - either into or out of their account.

I hope this helps! :)

Doc,
Is it one transfer per year per Master Account, or per contract on the Master Account? I have one Master Account, with three contracts at three resorts as xxx.1, xxx.2, and xxx.3 on the account. Do I get to do a transfer for each of the three sub-contracts?

It's per Membership number (Master Account as you've defined it).

As Carol explained, the transfer limit is per Membership number (master contract). If you have 2 master contracts and transfer points from one into the other, you would use the transfer for each with the one transaction for that Use Year.

Is it one transfer per calendar year? I did a transfer in October. Can I do one this month?

And the home resort doesn't change on the transfer? So if BWV is my home resort, I can't use the transferred points from SSR at the 11 month window for BWV? Boy that puts a wrench in my plans if that's the case. I would have to book part of my rooms next month and wait until June to book the rest. Ugh!

It's one tranfer per UY. Several years ago, I did a transfer in March and another in Sept, but one was from 07 UY and the other was to my 08 UY.

Yes, the points retain both the home resort and the UY of the original contract. We are staying at BWV in May with some nights booked using my home resort points and some nights booked at 7 months using transferred SSR points.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Hijacking....

How do you actually make the transfer to another owner's account? I know I've seen things on this board (that I can't locate just now) about both parties being on the line at the same time and each having access to the other's identifying information.

I have 20 points that I need to rent/transfer by the end of July, but I'm afraid of being "burned".

Could someone point me to the right thread??

As Suzanne said, transferred points retain their home resort and UY. If you want to book BWV in the 11-month window, you need to find a BWV owner who can transfer BWV points into your account.

What about the status of the points as they are in the owners account. IF the currents points are banked or borrowed does that matter as long as they get transferred and used in the time frame allotted?

Banked and Borrowed points cannot be transferred. Current points may be transferred, but if they previously were either banked or borrowed they can't be transferred. Once transferred, the points may be banked though.

You do not need to make a 3-way call to MS to make a transfer - as long as you have the name and address of the member to whom you want to transfer, you can call MS and transfer the points. Some have used a 3-way call with MS so that the receiving member will hear the confirmation. Neither party needs to hear the other's identifying information - unless you really want to share that with someone else (and I would never suggest that).

So to add to this, then why do people have a need to transfer by a certain date? Why can't they just bank their own points if they aren't going to use them? I know I must be missing something...thanks.

You cannot transfer points that have been banked.

However, you can still transfer points after the banking deadline has passed. In the past, some posters have said that they were able to bank transferred points after the banking deadline, but this may no longer be the case. So to maximize your ability to transfer points and have those point later banked by the new owner, you want to arrange a transfer of points prior to the banking deadline for that UY. -- Suzanne

In some cases they want to transfer before the 8th month of their Use Year and if that has not happened, they can still bank the points. In some cases, they want to use transferred points at 11 months to reserve at that resort.
