We'll be driving into Anaheim from the north for our trip this year. We plan to visit the La Brea Tar Pits on our way. We plan to be at the tar pits by noon, take a 45 minute tour at 1, then be heading to Anaheim by 3.

Google maps says it's about 1 hour from tar pits to PPH when I have checked at around 3pm on a Monday(day and time we'll be making the drive). Does this sound pretty accurate?

No. 3pm is when rush hour starts. As you pass through downtown people will be hopping on the freeway. Count on it taking 2 hours, hope for 90 minutes. If you spend more time at the tar pits or add LACMA and add some other stop, like dinner at Farmer's Market and leave around 6pm you could cut the drive time in half.

If you change the time you're leaving to 3pm on Google Maps it will give you an average. The upper estimate is above 2 hours.

Ok. Maybe we'll try get to the tar pits earlier and leave right after the tour and get out of LA before rush hour really kicks up or we'll just plan on a 2 hour drive and fire up the DVD player for the kids. Thanks for the info.

Plan for it to be at least a 90 minute drive anytime after 2pm. If you are comfortable driving streets part of the way and adjusting your route as you go with Google maps or waze you can sometimes shave off 30+ minutes instead of staying on the freeway when traffic gets really bad between the 10/110/60/5 pass.
