my mom owns a week at a timeshare in las vegas that is rci. how do i find out whether this has good enough trading power to get me into dvc? do i have to deposit the week first before i can see what i can trade for? or is there any way to check beforehand?

sorry, i'm new to this. my mom told me i could use it for my birthday (june 2011), so i figured i should look into it. thanks.

To see if what she has will have sufficient trade power, you'll need to deposit first. You could go on TUG (Timeshare Users Group) BBS and possibly see if others with that resort and unit size are able to see DVC. Unfortunately most RCI LV resorts are not likely to have sufficient trade power to see DVC. You can maximize your chances by getting the best week possible, larger unit and depositing at least 10-12 months out. I've looked over the list of resorts in LV and my suspicion is that there is not a single resort there that would see DVC that is not part of a points system (Shell, Hilton, RCI points, Worldmark or Wyndham) though I realize that some of those properties have non points owners as well. Even several of those in points are unlikely to see DVC but IF you have the points, that generally would remove most or all of the trade power issues.

thanks for the response. i was worried that might be the case. i guess i'll have to pony up the money for a hotel for my 30th bday :dance3:

I'd suggest you do the deposit and look for a great non DVC resort in Orlando. There are several resorts in RCI that are as good or better from a resort standpoint than is DVC. My suggestion would be to deposit and then see if you can see DVC, if so, just list DVC for now, if not, list DVC and the other acceptable resorts. I'd suggest you consider Cypress Harbour, The Fountains, all Hilton's and houses at summer bay as a min (only if you'll have a car). There are some very nice resorts in the area. I'm writing this from a 2 BR HC unit at The Fountains and even as one of the older units here, it's certainly as nice as DVC and has a MUCH better pool and play option.

If you can't pull a DVC resort through RCI, I would put Wyndham Bonnet Creek on the list along with any Hilton Grand Vacation Club resort. We loved our stay at Bonnet Creek a few weeks ago - so much so that we just bought some more Wyndham points resale. ;)

If the timeshare is on weeks, deposit asap!! Weeks trading power depends a lot on how early the week is deposited. I deposited both 2010 (poor planning) and 2011 in March. At that time the 2010 week had 4 possible DVC trades and the 2011 had 38 DVC trades available.
