Aside from having family, friends, and my company's main office in FL, we are scheduled to fly to WDW the Fri after Labor Day. DD11 is getting worried about what will happen if we are flying during a bad storm. I told her the airline (Jetblue) will not take any chances, and will not take off if it is not safe to. I have to admit that I am a bit nervous as well. It appears that this has been a very active hurricane season thus far. Does that normally infer that it will continue to be this bad throughout the season, or that it will be finished earlier? I know Frances is due to hit this weekend-my company is shutting down our system to avoid computer problems.

It has been an active hurricane season but the week you are planning to travel could be wonderful. You just never know. They haven't mentioned any new ones forming so for now there doesn't seem to be another one.

Airlines won't fly if they think they will have problems. I wouldn't worry about being in the air. Just have back up plans if they don't fly.

Well, we flew into Orlando on 8/13!! We beat Charley by about 10 hrs. I believe that we flew over/around Bonnie on the way down. They did have us in seatbelts for much of the flight. If there is any chance of a problem with the weather, they won't fly. I know I was concerned about running into Bonnie and all of us kept checking on MSNBC during the flight to see what Charley was up to!!! And we flew back to Ma that Sat. night that had such horrendous weather on the east coast. We sat at MCO for 3 1/2 hrs waiting for it to be safe enough to fly. So, I wouldn't worry too much. If the flight goes, it's safe enough for it to fly. don't forget....those pilots don't want to be flying unsafely either!!

If Frances comes our way, she is expected the Saturday before Labor Day (this Sat). That particular storm should be long gone by the following Friday.

There is another one forming. Tropical Storm Ivan is expected to show itself now. If it does, this will make 9 named tropical storms for the month of August. That will tie the record. September actually is usually just as bad as August, so no one know what's going to be next. Hermine was around during the week, but fizzled out. Frances looks like bad news. The last I heard I believe the winds were at 140 mph and she was at a cat. 4. My heart goes out to all of Southern friends. We should know more in the next couple of days.

I was going to mention that September is usually PEAK hurricane season so we just keep cringing with each storm. This one looks scary though!

Just to answer frann's question...if the weather is bad they won't fly. ALSO keep in mind that it is very likely that airports will close under hurricane warnings or if hurricane conditions are expected in that area. I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

Actually--airlines will make modifications to there flight schedules (cancellations and such) prior to the airports closing. They stay open as long as possible (the more people to move, the "less" that are crowded in the airport after all the ruckus passes). Airports "close" when wind speeds threaten the safety of take off and landings. Basically once the gusts are getting close and threatening--the airport will close--

But 1 week later, you should be fine on your flight. If there are storms on the flight path--they will either fly above (if it is safe) or fly around--they will not fly through a storm if they can help it.
