Probably too much extra work for DCL - and maybe it wasn’t a super popular add on. If they were making lots of $$$ booking these add ons, they probably wouldn’t be discontinuing them.

We always book a pre or post WDW stay with our DCL trips and I have never booked through DCL to get my WDW reservation. I book WDW completely separately but I can still add DCL transfers to the port. I do not think you got any kind of break by booking them together. I like to have control of all my WDW dining and park reservations so I always do it all separately as I change things a lot. I treat them as two distinct reservations.
For our cruise later this month we are flying into MCO, doing a few nights at WDW, taking the train down to FLL, staying one night at the Hilton Marina (booked on my own on points), taking DCL transfers to the port and then flying home after the cruise out of FLL. WDW and DCL are booked as separate reservations.
I remember in the very early years of DCL that if you booked a land/sea vacation your WDW resort was based on what category you booked on the cruise.....verandahs/suites stayed in Deluxe resorts at WDW, Ocean views were in Moderate resorts and Insides were at Value resorts.
