Question about the advertising banners that appear on this page

Entirely possible, Missy. Right now (9:30 PM) I'm seeing a Liberty Mutual ad indicating "Full accident forgiveness in Mass". I know I have very little personal information on the DIS, but I do have my location as Massachusetts :)

I'm wondering if those political ads show up if you're in the area that they are targeting--because I haven't seen one of them, and I'm in NY, not MA.

Yes, the Google is all seeing and knows where you are. If you proxy your connection you will see a change in the ads you see.

How about just get over it?? If you have such a problem with the ads then leave the website, simple as that. The owners are okay with what is being posted, its their website, not your, not mine. We can all leave at any time if we dont like it. I for one dont even notice the ads, they might as well not even be there because i skip right over them.

How about just get over it? If you have such a problem with the conversation, leave the website or avoid the thread. This is a discussion, based in large part on this site's rules against posting political (or religious) topics. Somebody wanted to know why the temporary advertising appeared to violate this rule - which it doesn't, since it IS advertising and not a post.

One other thing that hasn't been mentioned yet, I don't think, is that unless you turn off cookies to googlesyndication.com, it not only knows what page you're looking at, and where your ISP is located, but it also knows a lot of other websites that you've visited recently, and may factor that into their determination of which advertisements will be most appropriate for you.

I think it can see me IRL, too... I always seem to get the Weight Watchers ads!

Rats. I don't even see a banner on this thread right now - but the last one I did see advertised the "up to $750 gift card when you book a Disney vacation" promotion. I wonder how the advertising genie* knows I like Walt Disney World...

*yes, I know there've been extremely sensible, lucid explanations for why who sees what ad; I prefer to ascribe it to the advertising genie. So there.

Thanks. Makes sense to me.

I've got a Disneyland one! The advertising genie knows I want to go there.
