Question about "tablemates"

How do couples usually make out? Are you seating with other couples or families?
We've almost always just been the two of us. First cruise seated at an 8 top with 3 other couples in the same general age range. And, I don't know how DCL did it, but 3 of the husbands were in the same general field of employment, while 3 of the wives had similar jobs also.

Second cruise we were seated at an 8 top with 2 other couples and a mother/daughter (adult) duo.
3rd - had requested a 6 top with one of the couples from first cruise, and DCL put a single woman and a single man with us. But, the woman found friends on the second seating and switched, and the man only took his meals in the buffet.

4th - we were traveling with family, so had our own 6 top.
5th - we took one son (18 at the time) along and were seated at an 8 top with a family of 5. Not the best match as their make up was mom with daughter (12), son (16) and daughter (25) and her son (2). But we all got along well.
6- again traveled with family, had our own 6 top.
7 - 8 top with 3 other couples
8 - 4 top with other couple
9 -4 to with mom/daughter duo
10 - 8 top with another couple, 2 female friends, and a 2 male friends
11 - 8 top with 3 other couples

We usually request a private table. I cruised a few weeks ago with two girlfriends and no kids. They paired us with a much older couple and their son. They were very polite but we had nothing in common. We had planned to drink a lot during the cruise and maybe make it to dinner and maybe not, but we didn't want the pressure of making conversation with strangers every night which is why we had requested our own table. They moved us to a private table after the first night. We did talk to the other couple to let them know as we didn't want them to think that they had done anything wrong or there were hard feelings. We were surprised that they didn't pair us with other adults without kids. So I think sometimes they get it right and other times they miss the mark.

In 2015 we had the best tablemates. We became the best of friends. We have vacationed together twice since then and we email each other every day since then. Disney just has that magic touch!

We're a couple. We've only cruised twice. On the first cruise, we were seated at a 6-top (I'm not sure that is the right terminology) with a honeymooning couple from Germany and two sisters from Japan (although one of the sisters worked at the Japan pavilion in Epcot, WDW).

On our second cruise, we were seated at a 8-top with two female friends from the US military and two, solo male travellers from the US. The other "two" people never appeared at any of the dinners throughout the week. The servers kept setting the table for eight people every night, so I presume that there were two other people scheduled to sit with us, but we never met them.

I don't think they'd ever seat a couple with no kids at a table with children, although it may happen.

our first cruise, it was just us and our then 2 year old. they seated us with another family with a boy a little bit older than ours....however their son didn't speak english, so it was a bit of a bust as far as the kids were concerned. plus the mom in the family had very, very severe food restrictions and on the first night our servers held our food while the accommodated our table mates needs in order to serve us all at once and it took sooooo long. we were the last table left in the dining room and it was very late (we were on second dining).

second cruise, we were with a party of 6 so we had our own table.

our upcoming cruise, we are a party of 7 (new baby!). i assume we will have our own table again.
