Question about SWA & switching flights

I tried asking a SWA rep this question and got a confusing response. I figured one of my DIS friends would know the answer.

I already purchased two 1-way tickets from MCO to PHL for late October, $79 each. However, after purchase, a DING came up and offered the same for $49 each.

I'd like to opt for the cheaper tickets if I can (but if I can't, it will be fine).

Any ideas? Any penalties or costs?

That happened to me last year. It depends on what type of tickets you originally purchased. I guess if you got refundable, you could refund and save the money. However, from the rate you quoted, sounds like to me they are non refundable. What we did last year, and a SWA person may have to walk you through it, but I got a credit with SWA for the difference, not a refund. You have one year to use it or lose it. I wasn't going to use mine in a year so I gave mine to my brother because he travels a lot.

We actually did this for our last trip. We had booked tickets, and then saw the prices went down to $49 each way! We simply went online, switched the tickets, and got a credit of the difference to be used within one year. I believe there was also a $25 fee for switching the tickets.

I have done this before online. I selected the ding pricing and got all the way to the purchase screen (where you can key in your credit card) and stopped. I then opened another window for SWA and cancelled my previous reservation, creating a credit (ticketless travel fund). Then I switched back to the first screen and keyed in my personal information and clicked on the "view ticketless travel funds". There you can select those dollars to use toward the new ticket. The leftover funds will be usable for 1 year from when they were first used on a reservation. You can use them or you can let someone else use them.
I'm sure there may be others who will post and have better help, but didn't know how long your ding will last and wanted to give you some info.

Southwest does NOT charge a fee for switching tickets.
