Question about Southwest Visa

I signed up for the Southwest Visa when they were giving two round trip tickets. I received the Rapid Rewards and booked for November. Can I cancel the card now or do I need to wait until I have taken the flights? I'm thinking I can cancel now, but thought I'd check to be sure.

I did this offer also, and while I agree you should be able to cancel now, why wouldn't you wait until after you've taken the flights, just to be safe? You've already paid the yearly fee, and the next fee probably isn't until Feb./March. (I had until March 5 to use my flights, so I'm guessing that is around the time this offer came out.

I guess I'm just the nervous type. I'm going to cancel, as there is no way I'll be earning a flight with purchases and I don't want to pay a fee, but I'm going to cancel after I've taken my flights.

Opening credit and then closing it looks VERY bad on your credit report and DINGS you to lower your Fico score.
I understand you got the card for the tix (which are great by the way ;) ) but you should keep it open as long as you can...

I have no issues with my credit so this doesn't concern me at all. I just want to close it so I don't forget and get hit with another stupid annual fee. Plus, I'm ticked at Chase right now.

Does the cardholder have to use both free tickets or can you purchase for someone else?

I asked this same question in a thread, please let us know OP if you figure it out. I would like to get one for me and maybe one for DH for our trip next year, but we would be taking the trip in a little over a year. I am hoping it would work to buy them before the year is up, cancel them and then take the trip, but I want to make sure it would work before I apply.

You can purchase them for anyone. We did this in Feb. My husband opened a card and I opened a card. We got 4 free tickets and our family of 4 flew for free! It was a great deal.

Our credit is good so there was no worry about closing a card.

Really like my SW card. I got it when you only got 8 free credits, but have used it for major house remodeling purchases this past year and have received at least 14 free flights. We have used about 6 and still have 8 or 9 to go, as we are still earning points.
Their reward system changed in March, so the points earned since that time never expire.
We even earned a Companion Pass for two years due to the amount of purchases. I would pay the balance off every 4 or 5 days.

I was wondering how soon after your first purchase are the RR points available to use? Will you be notified that they have posted to your account or do you just need to keep checking your online RR account?:goodvibes TIA

I'm not sure if the deal you got is the same one that is being offered now where you get approx $960 in "Gotta Get Away" fares and then the next year when you renew/pay the fee you get 6000 points which is equal to $100 in fare money. So even though you have to pay the card fee which is $99 for the premier card, you make up for it the next year with the free points.

If your deal is offering the same thing, I'd keep the card another year because the points never expire.

I would wait until after the flight just to be on the safe side. I plan on keeping my SW credit card but when I do sign up for something that I need to make sure I cancel before a certain date, I put a reminder into my cell phone.
