Question about sharing meals? How do you do it?

I hope this doesn't sound silly but I've really wondered about it for quite some time. This morning I was reading about the cheapest you've ever went to Disney. One of the replies was about sharing a meal which then prompted me to finally post about it.

OK, so my question is how do you do it and do the CM ever look at you funny?

For example, let's say I'm at Mama Melrose's in MGM's and the server seats us both with menus. DH and I decide that we want the Oven Baked Chicken Parmesan over spaghetti rigati pasta for $15.99 and because (for whatever reason: where full and don't want alot or it's a big portion that we both won't be able to eat all of it) we decide that we'd like to share it. How would we ask for just one plate of it to share?

When the server comes to your table and says, "Have you decided what you'd like to order?"

What would we say, "Yes, we'll have a plate of the Oven Baked Chicken Parm. over spaghetti. That's it. Oh and could you bring an extra plate back with you? We'll be splitting it." ?

I would love to try it sometime because I am all about saving money. I've heard of people doing it all the time w/ the meal vouchers. ~ I've never tried the meal vouchers because I guess I don't understand those fully yet either~ but I'm a bit nervous because I don't know how it would play out and I am afraid that I would be embarrased if the server looked at us like we were crazy or if they made a fuss about not sharing plates.

I hope this didn't sound like a stupid question and I hope someone can help me w/ this.

TIA

I usually just say "We'll be sharing the oven baked chicken parmesan."
Most restaurants will even split the order in the kitchen and bring in on two plates. Others will just bring out an extra empty dish.

Waiters/waitresses have never even batted an eye at us. Although usually I share with my daughter and my DH gets his own meal.

I share with my daughter all the time. There's no way I could eat all the food they bring you in most restaurants. Anyway, how would you ever have room left over for dessert? ;) That's usually my incentive for sharing!

Don't worry about it. DD (21) and I share meals at home and on vacation most of the time.

We've done this for a long time.

I just say we are going to order the ------and we will be sharing it. Just bring an extra plate, please.

We just did this at the Rainforest Cafe at Mall of America, Mpls. last weekend. Ttheir portions are huge. Plus the steak we ordered was $20, so it's not like we're getting by cheap anyways.

A good place to share at Disney is Primetime. We always share the chicken plate and they usually divide food in the kitchen.

herc.

Im sure you've probably split dessert with somebody right? Well its the same concept...just say "we'd like to split the spaghetti rigati please".

Sorry, but dessert is where I have to draw the line....especially if it's something that's REALLY good! I just tell my daughter, "You're going to have to order your own!". ;)

I think years ago this would have been a "no no". But today with the huge portions and prices it has become more of the norm. I often share meals with DD4 even at local restaurants. The waiters are very accomodating and bring an extra plate for her.

We shared meals on business trips - DH couild only expense one meal for himself - so we would order an appetizer, an entree and a dessert! ;) Anyway, just tell the server that we'd like to split the spaghetti...... like others have said, if they are told before they will most likely split it in the kitchen and bring it to you on two plates.

Have fun!

That sounds very easy, I could certainly do that. Thanks for the speedy responses too. You all are always such a help and full of vast knowledge.

Oh, and hello LeoGrrrrl1982 from one (Smyrna) Delawarean to another. :wave2: Sometimes I think Dsis's and I are the only ones from the small wonder.

I have a question about sharing with the dining plan....

Can my daughter who is priced as an adult share with my younger child who is priced as a child? Thanks!

I've split meals plenty of times in the past without any trouble! I agree with the other posters: Just say, "We'd like the ___ split into two plates please."

At home, I like to have a take-home box so I can have the leftovers for lunch the next day; on vacation, that doesn't often work out. Weight Watchers actually suggests that you order half your meal on your plate and the other half pre-packaged in a take-out box.

I agree that restaurant servings have greatly increased in size these days. I suppose it's because food is actually very cheap, and it doesn't take much extra effort to cook and serve a huge portion --but it increases the meal's value in the customer's eyes.

CrazedDisFan -- If you buy an adult entree (cash, voucher, whatever method of purchase), you can do what you please with that entree. You can eat it all yourself, you can feed half of it to your daughter, you can leave it all on your plate. You paid for it. Disclaimer: We're not talking buffets here.
