Question about settling your bill...

Hi there Dis'ers I was hoping you could help me with a few questions. My family and I will be leaving for Pop Century in a few weeks and I heard that you can set up your resort key to have charging privileges. My question is this: can you leave a debit card as the "deposit" then settle up your bill with a personal check at the end of the week?

I refuse to own a true credit card as I have seen too many people get themselves into financial ruin so it is my opinion if I don't have it... I can't spend it. But my bank only allows transactions of $500 or less per 24 hour period and I didn't want to run up a $501 charge and at the end of the week have my card declined even though the money is there.

Have any fellow dis'ers paid with a personal check but still had charging privileges?

TIA

You might want to check with your bank. My banks allow more of a charge is it is done with the credit feature of the card.

I also check our bill the night before we check out so we can catch any mistakes. I also pay on the bill at that time so I know if there are any problems.

If you don't want to go over your daily limit you can have them charge the card every couple of days. Just stop at the front desk and they can take care of it for you.

They do accept Visa/debit cards for charging privledges, but I think that they will charge your card automatically before you check out for room charges.
When travelling for business, we stay at the AKL and what my company does is pay for the room up front, then adds $100/per day for incidentals, all paid by check before I even arrive. That way, your room charging privledges equal the amount you have paid over the cost of your room. Any unused credit that is not used during your stay is refunded in cash. I hope that makes sense.

Why not stop in every couple of days and have them run your balance through? At the value resorts they will only allow $500 credit at a time until you clear your balance, so you shouldn't have any problems anyhow.

When we checked into All Stars a couple of years ago, they ran our DEBIT card and told us we had $500 in charging privileges. So I think they will already know what your limit is.
You can also call down to the front deak after a couple fo days and ask for them to go ahead and charge what you have so far, then do the remaining balance later.

You can call your bank and verify that you will be on vacation and ask for a temporary lift be put on your account for a certain day or days. (We did this when we bought our $1500 computer)
Also, know that soemtimes when you put your DEBIT card down for privileges, it could put a hold onto XXX amount of dollars in your account.

Thanks for the replies.. I forgot to mention that the room and tickets are already paid for upfront. The only thing we need to cover during this trip now is food and incidentals and the concept of charging back to your room and settling at one time really pleasing to me.

I don't want to carry a great deal of cash and that poses another question for ya'll: If your paying your bill by credit/debit card how much cash do you take along for "small" purchases?

So write a check out for however much you'd like to have in your account at check in and that's the amount you can spend. They'll refund any unused cash.

About $200 at all times.

we are also planning on paying our resort/tix up front and will only have to worry about meals... can i bring cash (or trav. checks) to the front desk at the beginning of our stay and then charge against it using our keycard, rather than carrying the $ around?

dh really wanted a dining plan so that we would not have to use money/deal w/expenses while away and i understand that, but when running the #s w/my TA, it is obvious that we can stay/play much cheaper (even eat cheaper w/out limitations or worrying that i am getting the most bang for our buck! LOL!)... so i was thinking that if we dropped our food budget money at the front desk and then charged against it we'd have the best of both worlds (and i may not even tell dh we don't have a dining plan! LOL!)

the only thing i don't want is a big credit card bill at the end of our trip!

You absolutlely can!!! The only thing Disney likes better than a paying customer is a customer who pays up front!!! ::MickeyMo
Have Fun!!!

It's settled then, if Disney will take a personal check I will write one upon check-in and then ask to charge against it. I would much rather pay up front then to be surprised at the end of the trip too.

I am planning $150 per day for 2 adults for meals and incidentals, I am hoping that I ere on the side of caution and come home with money.

And at checkout, you'll still get an itemized list of when and where all of your charges took place. Like safetymom said, make sure you review it before they refund you your unused balance. They have been known to make mistakes from time to time!
Have a great vacation!! ::MickeyMo

We, too, paid for our trip upfront. The only World costs left were food and incidentals. I hate to carry cash, so we used the charging privileges thru CBR. We did carry about $20/day (for 2 adults) in cash for small things like locker rentals, mid-afternoon snack, etc. Meals were charged to the resort.
