Question about self service kiosk

My son will be flying alone for the first time. We have never used a self service kiosk, we always check luggage at the counter. Can someone tell me step by step instructions for using the kiosk so that I can tell my son what to do.

I love self-check kiosks!

Really, they are pretty self-explanatory. You just walk up and follow the instructions on the touch screen.

Usually there's a prompt to push the screen to start check-in. It may or may not ask if you are checking bags. Some will let you check bags even using a kiosk and others do not. Depends on the airline and the airport. Your son will be prompted to either swipe a credit card (no charges associated, they use it to find you on the reservations list). Or, you can enter the confirmation code you got with the reservation.

The system will find the reservation and list the traveler(s) included in that reservation. It will ask you to confirm who you are checking in. You do that and then it will print the boarding passes for you. That's it. Then you just head off to security and your gate.

Like Zelly said, it is really easy. They do make it very easy to follow, no worries.
However if he's worried about being able to do it, you could always check in early online and print out your boarding pass at home.

1) You can't swipe just any charge card. I believe it has to be the charge card you used to make the reservation.

2) First time I did it, I was looking for a "kiosk." I asked someone in the airport for directions, and he kept pointing to the left, but I didn't see a kiosk. All I saw were what I thought were ATM machines. Turns out those were the kiosks. Oops.

3) Remember that the kiosk will be before security, not after security, because you can't get through security without a boarding pass.

Depending on the airline, do the check-in online and print the boarding pass at home. With Delta we check-in online and also pay for the checked luggage at the same time. Once at the airport you can go to the kiosk (have to use the cc that the reservation was made with) and finish the luggage check-in by getting baggage claim printout, or go the the curbside desk and they will finish the luggage check for you.

DS will not be checking luggage. He will be flying Delta. I will have the CC used to buy his ticket. Is this going to be a problem at a kiosk? Should I tell him to get a boarding pass at the counter?

If he has a printer at home, he should check-in at home. Then he will not have to go to the counter, he can go straight to security.

If he wants to check-in at the airport, you don't need the credit card. It gives you the option to enter the confirmation #.

It does not need to be the card used to make the reservation. The machine just checks the magnetic strip for the name on the card and matches it to the passenger list.

But I also think that in the past, it had to be the credit card you used to purchase the ticket. I don't think I'm imagining it. From e-how.com:
