Question about reservation and tranferred points

We're hoping to buy soon and I've been watching the rent/trade board and have a question about transferring points

Since I deal easier with examples, let me try to pose the question that way.

Let's say I have a June UY. In March 2004 I make a reservation using my 2004 points for a reservation in November of that year. In September, someone offers to transfer points into my account that expire in December. Can I reallocate the points needed for the November stay to first use the soon to exprie december points? thereby allowing me to take anouther trip at a later date with my June points? Or how would this best be handled.

Yes, you can and should do that.

MS will need to do the point transfer for you. After the points are in your account, MS can do the reallocation of points.

I've heard conflicting reports as far as the reallocation goes. Some have said that reallocation is not possible (a few have even argued that it's not allowed) if there's a waitlist for the same dates.
So, you may or may not be able to reallocate the points. You can always try. It might be too risky as far as getting transferred points that expire in Dec though. For that particular example, I'd try to find a member with any UY between Jun and Oct.

That's news to me! In nine years as a member I have never had any problem reallocating points when I wanted to use banked or borrowed points instead of current use year points.

Now, if a member also wishes to change a reservation in some other way...type, date, etc...that may cause a problem. But simply using banked points instead of current points is just good point management.

Transferred points are usually treated differently than banked/borrowed points- especially if they have a different home resort.

In this case, the reservation was made outside the 7 month priority. If MS allowed points transferred from a different home resort to be reallocated for the same reservation (within 7 months), it would place other members at a disadvantage if they are on the waitlist.

If there are no members on the waitlist, there will be no problem reallocating transferred points for an existing reservation.

This policy is consistent with the DVC rules regarding the 11/7 month priority and with the rules regarding transferred points and the waitlist. Sometimes an individual CM may allow a reallocation to occur outside of the policy, but usually this reallocation won't be allowed- depending on the waitlist status.

Before committing to the transfer for this purpose, I'd sure want to find out from MS if a reallocation would be allowed for the dates of your reservation.

Good luck!

Oh, ITA! I've done it before myself, reallocating to use banked points instead of current points. But like I said, there seems to be some debate (reference this link) about whether it technically is allowed or not when there is an existing waitlist on the dates you already have booked. So, to be on the safe side, it's better to be careful, especially with the scenario that the OP presented as an example.

This is in the Member's book somewhere. You can't reallocate points from another resort at the 7 month window.

If you had points at two resorts, and only wanted to stay at one of them all the time, you could book at THAT resort at 11 months, switch the points at 7 months, then REUSE the original points to book AGAIN at an 11 month window.

Not nice.
