Question about Renting Points?

Can someone explain this to me? Is it usually cheaper to rent points from someone than to book a regular room at say, AKL or WL?? How much more cost efficient?

Yes it's cheaper. Points rent for $10-$12 on average. The required points are based on the time of travel, resort, and type of room. Same with the regular room.

Hmmm.. Is there anywhere I can look to see how many points are required for specific nights and rooms? Or can anyone point me in the direction of where I can learn more about this? I don't want to just jump in on that board looking for a reservation before I understand more of how it works... Is it safe to rent points from people? What kinds of risks are there? How exactly do I rent points? Do I pay the person I'm renting from?
Can you tell I am a complete naive newbie with this?? LOL

Go to the DVC Points Chart at the top of this page. There is also a points calculator there. I have rented four times and have saved quite a bit and have been well pleased with all transactions and accomodations.

It can be significantly cheaper, but there is a risk involved. This will be a private transaction between you and the owner/member. Disney will not be involved, and will not step in to help if there are any problems. You will not be able to check on the reservation yourself, only members can call MS. If you need to cancel or change the reservation, you may lose your money. Many owner/members have "no refund" policies for cancellations, especially if the points are close to expiring or would go into a holding account.

If you find some one you can trust, and feel comfortable with (and comfortable with not controlling your reservation) than renting can be a fantastic way to get a bigger/better room at a great price.

Also be aware that Friday and Saturday nights are usually more expensive with points. You will get the best value Sunday to Thursday.
