Hello everyone,

I've been on this DVC section of the boards for a few days, going through different scenarios to see if it is worth it for us to buy into BLT. We have been going to the CR for the past 2 years (1) 9 night trip and a 6 night trip this past January. Already to looking to go again next year. We have 3 kids (teen, preteen, and toddler)...so I know all of them will be wanting to go for a long time...even as my older ones enter college...they may lack off a bit while my younger one still wants to go and as he gets older the older ones may like going with their families...gosh lol.

Anyhows...my main question is....for people who have rented out their points, how hard is it? When you wanted to rent out the points were you on average always able to? I was actually debating about renting points this next trip because the rates I found really are a good savings or at least comparable to current promotions.

My thinking is buy (3) 100 point contracts so that in the future I can deed it to my 3 kids. It might not be that much but it's something for them to start with if they wanted to add on or it would be easy to sell.

The reason I am asking about renting...is that I wanted to get enough to cover a week at BLT with extra just in case...and with the kids in school one year we might not be able to go and I would probably rent them rather than bank them because 300 would be plenty for one year.

Like to know other people's thoughts. Thanks in advance:goodvibes

In this uncertain, weak economy I would not recommend buying into DVC if you will need to count on renting it out to be able to manage it.

It seems renting has slowed down and is not as easy as it once was. Folks just are not spending big for vacations when they are losing their jobs and homes, with much more of that to come.

Why not buy half that amount of points, and add on in the future as you are financially able to handle it? Probably a more conservative route, but better in these times IMHO. :)

With the direction that the DVC is going lately, I wouldn't count on being allowed to rent your points in the future. Disney can change the rules when ever and as often as they want.

I was told by my guide that the minimum 1 contract purchase at BLT is 160 points, so you would not be able to buy 3 100 point contracts. (I wanted to buy 2 100 point contracts and was turned down!). I wanted to do the same thing, have a contract for each of my 2 kids...

::yes:: And also what Carol said above.

Don't use the ability to rent as a justification for a purchase, because that ability could go away with the stroke of a pen. DVC has already made significant changes in the POS regarding renting within the last year. I doubt they could eliminate it entirely, but they certainly could drastically restrict it the way they did transfers.

In addition to the economy, recent "new" resort sales have been promoted with "developer points." Many people are enticed by those points, but later find they can't use them before they expire -- so they throw them in the rental supply. If you look on the Rent/Trade board right now, you'll see a LOT of points for rent, and many points for rent in the $8 range. LOTS of supply, not much demand.

And I'm like Carol -- I think that situation will get worse and will last several years. Even if DVC doesn't crack down on renting, it may become much more difficult and less profitable.

Thanks for the replies.

So you are telling me if I went into a sales office and said I want 300 points...pay it in full...but I want 3 (100) contracts for my kids...they won't do it? So they rather lose a sale. Well that really stinks.

Thanks again everyone

No, they would want your first one to be for 160, you could then do any break up after that (ie: 160, 100, 40 or 160, 70, 70)

However, I have heard that some people have asked to speak to a supervisor and gotten things approved that no one thought would. For example, I wanted to add on at BLT with 100 points, but wanted two 50 point contracts. I was told I would lose the incentives if I did that, but then found out others were able to do it because their guide went and got manager's approval.

If you really want 300 points and really want 3 contracts, and are prepared to pay for them, then I certainly would contact DVC and try. If sales are down right now, you just NEVER know what they will let go through!!! The worst case is they say no to you and you say no to them!!!

Not hard at all. The toughest part is making the reservation and securing the resort, accommodation and dates the prospective renter needs. Also, most will not buy all the points you offer for rent. Be prepared to Break em up. Sme people want like 10 points here 12 there

It can be time consuming. But better than wasting points if you can't take a vacation !!!:wizard:

yep.

and if they aren't willing to do the 100+100+100, you could also buy a 100 pt resale and then add-on 2 100pt contracts directly...

This thread is almost two years old, so let's close this one and seek more timely information here on Ops. Thanks all! :)
