One of my relatives who is coming out to my wedding in December, She has been told by her travel agent at Thomas Cook that if she has any convictions (including speeding?) that she has to declare it and appear before some judicial person on entering the USA? :confused3

She ended up really confused - as she isnt driving out there.

Can anyone explain what she actually needs to do?

That's a new one on me Laura, I have points on my license but have never declared anything and I have driven in Florida many times.

Unless that makes me a criminal ;)

What a load of absolute rubbish from the travel agent.

1) Points on a UK driving licence for minor offences do not affect your ability to hire a car - most car hire places don't even ask for the paper part of the licence showing endorsements.

2) If she has a criminal record, she will require a visa - which is done at the US Embassy before she travels. Speeding, etc are not recordable offences and do not require a visa.

3) Just who is this judicial person that she has to go and see on entering the USA? There certainly aren't judges hanging around airports (unless they are flying somewhere, of course)

I would be tempted to go back with her to Thomas Cook and demand to see the manager about the nonsense that she has been fed by a cr*p travel agent.

Thats what i thought, i mean they cant exactly have someone there asking everybody who has points on their license. On a plane of 300 odds are around half will probably have them.

Just wanted to check before i told her the ravel agent was talking cr*p!

Thanks guys!

Completely agree that the TA was telling rubbish!

Not only have they made a mistake but they embelished on it aswell!

Both DF & I have 3 points for speeding and checked this out before flying to WDW last year and came up with what has been posted already and that is that minor speedng offences do not count as a Criminal Record.

Tell her not to worry at all. I have a few and so does Steve and they have never been mentioned when hiring the car.

Total clap trap,I've just got rid of my points-so on our last 2 trips I have had 10 & had no problems ( by the way not some mad "joy" rider, just unlucky & due to the proliferation of speed cameras in places that they are designed for revenue........) I think the only time the points may be picked up is if it were dangerous driving or drunk driving so this maybe where the TA is getting mixed up!
SD :firefight

Dont worry you will be ok. I got done for speeding just before we were due to go to the House of the Mouse. Rang the US Embassy in London and they said not to worry.

Its only when you have been arrested that you have a criminal record. Then you would need to get a visa.

Is it any wonder people get confused with visa and driving before a trip ,when you have travel agent's mouthing off rubbish like this. :confused3
