Question about parent doing an Add-On

We just purchased 225 points 02-07-08. My Mom (who is 67) thinks she would like ~50 points. Part of her reasoning is that we are going on a cruise01-2010 and she would like to use points to pay for that (I know some don't like using points to buy cruises). She also would like to be able to get her own room when we go to WDW (she plans on going with us for the next several years, hopefully). We own at AKV and we are going to start looking at buying.

Should she buy her own points in her own name through Timeshare Store since Disney will not do an initial contract less than 160 points?

Should she buy 50 points from Disney under our name as an add-on?

What resort? She loves Epcot, but my DH was thinking that just 50 at Boardwalk or Beach Club would be hard and she might not ever get the dates she wants.

ALSO, for the cruise, the only way you can pay for points is if the price of the cruise (pointswise) is less than the total of the points you have available (3 years worth if you are banking and borrowing). (Meaning you can have a cruise that costs 170 points and only have 150 points to pay with and pay difference in cash). Do people rent 10-30 points?

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks

Her options are to either buy a 50 (or any other number) point resale or purchase the 160 minimum thru DVC. You cannot buy an add-on to your contract in her name since that would have to be deeded the same as your original contract.

If she doesn't care about member perks, then you could buy the add-on and let her use those points as she wishes. It all depends on how the additional points would be titled.

I just talked to our guide about this. He said she could do an associate membership (that way, if she wants to finance anything she can do it under her name but she won't have a membership card). Would this be problematic for times when she travels without us?

It would make more sense under our name becuase we travel mostly together and the combined points will give us the most options. This way we won't have to do transfers and whenever she reaches the age that she is done with it, we won't really have to change anything.

Can you do an associate through the Timeshare Store?

She would be an associate on anyone that you decide. All you have to do is let DVC know and I think that you would have some papers to fill out.She would be able to book reservations with the points from your contract.

Can you add on 50 points and then gift the contract or sell it to your Mom?

Yes, but there would still be fees involved and closing costs. ROFR would also be involved.

Adding her as an associate (this is done thru MS for any contract) would be OK, but she still would not have a member card. She could then make or cancel reservations using your contract. All correspondence would still go to the household on the master contract.

If she wants 50 points, I'd just direct her towards a resale contract and she then would have all benefits of membership and with banking/borrowing would have up to 150 points to use every three years.

I would worry about the potential of getting points messed up during bookings if hers were just the 50 pts. I am not sure that MS can distinguish that and would book whatever points were available. Nothing would get messed up intentionally.

Based upon other point nightmare posts that I have seen here, I would (personally) recommend contacting a resale company and ask to be put on a waiting list (if available) for small contracts.

You can change your current contract to include her, do the add on in your name then if you want, transfer it to her with a cost of $50-400 depending on how you do it, or she could buy independently with closing costs. The easiest and cheapest to get it in her name is to do the add on yourself then transfer to her.
