Hi everyone,

I've never been on a cruise before, but will be going later this year.

It is very important that I check my work e-mail while I'm on the ship at least 2 times each day (it was they only way they'd give me time off). I don't need to load pictures or video...just access an e-mail client.

Is this possible? Is this plausible?

TIA

yep, they have computers to use, there are a few different payment options. I never used them so I am not 100% what the different price deals are.

Just got off the Wonder on July 25th and use the internet. Here are the prices for it. $0.75 per minute or $27.50 for 50 minutes, $40.00 for 100 minutes, or $75.00 for 250 minutes. We took the $75.00 plan and it worked out to about $0.30 per minutes. If you get it you must sign off using a special web address or you will not be signed off even if you thought you did. At the moment I cannot think of it but do remember entering 1.1.1.1 to sign off.

Hope this helps.

yes. of course some times during the day are busier than others & u may have to wait at a computer (unless u bring your laptop!)...some times the internet may be down...but it's totally plausible that u will be able to access your email several times during each day!!

So can you bring a laptop & buy their connection? Use it from your stateroom or would you have to be in the somputer room & plugged in?

Yes, you can bring your own laptop. Wireless should work in your stateroom, but signal is better on deck. You will face the same speed at the desktop computers.

And be aware that the Internet on board is SLOW. Think back to the days of dialup. If you do have a laptop you can connect, pull down your new email, disconnect to respond, and then connect again to send. This will be a much more efficient use of your time and whatever internet package you purchase.

I sure hope the boss will pickup the tab if they require you to check in.

I won't get into legalities, but, my company blocks remote access to work email when we are on vacation. Official company line is when employees are off, they are OFF. They are do to no work.
Rumor is our HR teams lawyers fear a lawsuit because such a requirement may be against federal labor law.

I was on the Wonder 8-3-10 for the 5 day. I've read on here about the slow internet but I logged on in my stateroom and it wasn't bad at all. Even the front desk warned me it would be slow. It might have been due to the time I logged on. It was in Nassau about 4pm. Most people were probably involved in things freeing up bandwidth.

Don't buy one just for the cruise but if you have one it doesn's hurt to bring it. pirate:

Lol, of course not, we have on already and I'm planning on buying the biggest package, I just wanted to see if it was worth bringing it instead if trying to get a computer on board.;)

I have wireless internet through verizon. Is there anywhere my usb modem will work? Can you get free wi-fi and if so can I access wi-fi through my droid?

Mostly likely yes, for free, in port.

Nothing free on the ship. There are no wifi/cell towers at sea, you are using the ones on the ship, and they charge for that.

Great information...We will need access, too..We have to be able to check in on the family member, our Golden Retriever, Charlie, who will be home with a dog sitter... Besides, we have to set up our fantasy football lineup before we leave the ship..

I would NEVER EVER use a public computer for access to a company network.

Just a word to the wise - in these days of key stroke loggers (software that will write down every key stroke that you hit, to be accessed later by someone), to someone just looking over your shoulder. Accessing websites without encryption is just asking to get hacked.

Are you definitely going to get hacked if you use a public computer? No, but it increases your chances.

if you have a laptop, it's best to use it, although that, in itself does not guarantee safety. You will be on a public network. Just make sure you are on a secure website (https, not http), as most companies email servers are, and you will be fine.

Access is via satellite and as others have said is very slow. It is also subject to meteorological conditions such as fog and cloud cover.

We took the Med cruise in August and DH bought 500 minutes of internet access. He was only able to connect to the internet via his ipad for a total of 16 minutes in 10 days. Disney refunded our money. I don't know if they have the same issue in the Caribbean but in the Med. accessing the internet via your own device was horrible, I don't know how it is using their computers.

It's just as slow in their computers. I couldnt get my iPad to connect at ALL on the wonder this summer. Had my MacBook on the magic in 2008. It connected fine but I had to do something special to log it off.

I have not used the internet on board the ship. From what I have read here and on another board, the best time to connect was early morning and late at night. There is more folks using the internet during the day and it gets much slower. More folks using a limited amount of bandwidth means slower internet.
