Question about Obama

Maybe it's post 12 that caused some confusion. I'm OK, though, with assuming that post was just a yes or no question. It's a good day here. No snow!!!!:goodvibes

There were posts before that one that I considered antagonistic. The OP wanted to know if anyone else had never heard of him. I personally didn't understand the need for comments that Obama supporters were going to rush in to defend him, since the OP was merely asking if he was unknown to anyone else.

So, I guess the 70% of the voting public that elected him to the Senate in 2004 were just picking the guy with the funny name? :confused3

No, many were voting AGAINST Alan Keyes, his last-minute Republican opponent.

People often vote against people in politics, not just for people (as I am sure you will do if Obama does not get the democratic nomination when you vote against McCain).

I don't care, they can if they want, I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM BEFORE HE IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT..........Hope they hear me now:rotfl:

I don't understand why you think this is so funny. :confused3

You may not have heard about him before but you have certainly heard of him now.

I saw him at the DNC in 2004, heard the talk that he would someday be president. I have learned a lot about him from watching the debates. The more I watched him the better I liked him. Does it really matter how well known he was before he started to run for POTUS? If you are really interested there is a whole lot of info out there. Nothing funny about it.

He's been on my radar since I saw him at the DNC in 2004..In fact when I saw him speak I called my husband into the room to see him and said that he would be president one day. I read his books too... There has been a lot of chatter about him since 2004 and I was not at all surprised that he was running for president.

What Jenny said, but not all people pay attention to Politics, so I can see where people may not have heard about him.

I don't blame you and I agree with you.

Other presidental runner I had NEVER heard of prior to their run.

Mitt Romney
Mike Huckabee
Ron Paul
Mike Gravel
Dennis Ku-- however the heck you spell his name
Joe Biden
ROSS PEROT
BILL CLINTON
GEORGE BUSH
JOHN KERRY

I can say as I get older I pay more attention but honestly, MOST people have not heard of most of the candidates prior to their running unless they are in a scandal, the current VP or some other notable situation.

But yet it is still not about Obama. He's not responsible for what his spiritual advisor does. He may not agree with it. Who knows. Don't you have friends who sometimes do things you don't agree with?

Of course. I dont call them my spiritual advisor's though.

Thanks, I really didn't know ( I don't follow his campaign THAT closely). The fact that it was a Newsmax article as well...

Hey - I just grabbed that one. You can google Obama and Rev Wright and find your own sources.

Gimme a break - cuz it's a NewsMax article. I specifically didnt choose the FOX one cuz I knew I'd get that response.

Google his name. And while youre at it - google Obama with William Ayers, too.

I hear you. I'm not sure why you're upset. It's nice you're interested learning more about Obama. party:

Not upset, I am just stating my opinion, I think that he isnt the right person to be in charge of this country

I'm confused too. It seems like Gail posted a very simple yes/no question and right away it turned into a fight. :confused3

Thanks Bob that was my intention, just a simple suestion, to be honest I wish I didn't post it, I thought we were all grown up enough to answer a simple question
Again thanks Bob for reading my post the way it was intended

Think of it this way...If Hillary wasn't Bill's wife....would we have heard of her?

Good point and that answer would be NO, I never thought of it that way but thank you for pointing it out.

Who's laughing, I asked a simple question to a very important subject and I don't get a simple answer, not laughing at all.

Of course. I dont call them my spiritual advisor's though.

Googling is fun. Google John McCain and Charles Keating sometime. Although I didn't have to Google that as I lived in AZ at the time.

If you don't think he is the right person to be in charge of the country, why did you pose the question? What did you base it on? On his policy stances? Any of the previous 20 debates?

I was well aware of him from when he ran and won against one of my favorite GOP leaders, J.C. Watts and well, trounced him. The media made such a big deal about what a strong up and comer he was then that I took notice, and this is coming from a Republican.
Of course I read the paper and watch the news daily, so I am probably a part of a shrinking minority, Ferraro will be after me next!

Obama has only been a US senator since January 2005. He has been actively campaigning for president for at least a year. So, he really has only been an active Illinois US senator for about 2 years.

And believe me, I am from Illinois and he was NOT well-known in Illinois until he ran for president. Even during Obama's senatorial campaign, there was more talk about his opponent because the opponent had a scandal and had to drop out. After his election to the US senate, Obama vanished from the local papers (and of course moved to D.C.) and we really didn't hear anything about him until his name was put out there as a possible presidential nominee.

Ok- if ONE of our TWO senators was not well known prior to his presidential campaign, then I am ashamed of IL.

Ooooor, SOME people just don't pay attention. I can't speak for all of IL (obviously, since most people didn't know who Obama was until last year apparently) BUT, most people that I know at least knew of him and some of his legislation.

Same here. I told my husband, called my mother and talked to all my girlfriends after that about Barack Obama. I knew then. My Chicago friend and I stalked him one fine afternoon. lol! Often though, it's the unknowns who become President. Jimmy Carter, George Bush Jr.(Senior ran for POTUS many times before actually elected VP), we would not have known Reagan had he not been a 2bit actor. Governors and Senators are often little known except to their constituents. I don't really understand someone from Illinois not having heard of Obama though; he was in the news a lot there. Some people just aren't interested in politics. To each his own.

iirc he had one day a week alloted to traveling the state and meeting his constituents, but I could be misremembering the frequency.

My guy used to deliver his constituents. ;) (Ron Paul is an OB.)

I heard of Obama shortly after the DNC in 2004. I thought he was cute. :rolleyes1
