Question about non-manufacturer lens hoods

I recently took the plunge and bought a new walk-around lens for my DSLR. I got the canon 17-85 f 4-5.6 IS! Anyway, I'm excited for it to arrive. Now I am looking into getting the lens hood for added protection. Why spend the money on a lens and not protect it?

I'm looking at both the lens hood made by canon (about $30) and hoods on ebay made by third parties (about $10). Does anyone have experience with non-manufacturer lens hoods? If so, is it something that is worth paying the extra $20 for to get the manufacturers?

P.S. Yes, I am a little concerned about the aperture on this lens but I expect the lens to be used outside 90% of the time and I have the nifty 50 for my indoor shots. I guess we'll see how it goes...

Edited for links to lens hoods

If it is the same type material (i.e. plastic), mounts the same way, and is a similar shape then it should work fine. For something that wide, I would think a petal shape would work the best. I personally do not like ones that are thread mount or metal.

that is exactly what I thought. Thanks for the information. I cannot wait to get this lens! Getting the hops for $20 less will be helpful.

doesn't the lens come with a lens hood..??

Nope, its new. Nothing I saw shows that it comes with the lens hood. Some of the reviews I read on the lens also mentioned that it didn't come with the hood. Its a little annoying that for $500 they couldn't throw in a $10 piece of plastic.
