I got a great rate with National for our upcoming Gettysburg trip, picking up the car at our local airport. I'm an Emerald Club member would like to have my sister listed as an authorized driver. When I was looking around at the benefits to being a member and this is what it lists:

Authorized Drivers
Free (in the United States and Canada) - An Emerald Club member's spouse, immediate family member living with him/her, business partner, employer, or fellow associate who has an assigned corporate contract with National and drives the car for business purposes. All other additional authorized driver situations are subject to a daily charge. Click here for our policy on additional drivers.

She is 25, lives at the same address, has a clear record, credit card, etc. I called the location where we are picking it up from and they said that only spouses can be authorized drivers without the fee. I told them that wasn't true because the website clearly states immediate family members living at the same address are eligible.

I emailed National and this is what they said:

I apologize for any misinformation you received from the rental location. Any immediate family member who shares the same address as you, is an authorized driver on your account. Your sister may drive any rental you pick up at no additional cost and without signing the rental agreement.

I already printed off the website where it lists immediate family members are eligible and will also print off the email response from National to take with me when I go to pick up the rental car. Is there anything else I should have with me in case they decide to give me a hard time about it. It would be no problem to pay the extra per day to have her added, but based on what I have read I shouldn't have to pay anything extra.

Also what does it mean that she can be an authorized driver without signing the rental agreement? This is the first time that my sister will be an authorized driver with me since she just turned 25 in January and all other rentals it was just me listed as the driver so I'm kind of confused.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you don't share a car insurance policy with your sister and you plan to rely on the insurance coverage from your credit card, be aware that some cards only cover damage caused when the car is driven by an authorized dirver who has signed the rental agreement. Thus, she may need to sign up as an authorized driver even though the rental agency considers that she is one even without her signature.

Best of luck. -- Suzanne

We are both on the same AAA policy. She just got a new drivers license in January when she turned 25 so that is correct and current. As is mine. So hopefully there won't be any problems. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

I'm still confused though about her being authorized to be a driver, but without signing the rental agreement. Do I tell them I want her as a driver or can she just drive the car without me telling them? I'm so confused by that.
