Question About Name Fills

What are they used for exactly?
I've been trying to figure it out and see them being asked for regularly but can't for the life of me figure out what they are for.

I plan on printing it out and framing for a wall decoration for my girls' rooms. Then will use them to make tshirts for my kids when we visit disney world.

I have laminated them for room signs, printed on T-shirts and ironed onto bags. My lids LOVE them. They make amazingly cute personalizations.
