Question about Meal Vouchers

The dining plan at DLR is not worth it (in my opinion and many others here) because:
a) It doesn't save you much money overall
b) You get a set amount of dollar amount vouchers and when you use those vouchers you don't get change. So for example if you want to pay for something that costs $4.95 with a $5 voucher, you will lose 5 cents. That's not a big deal, but if you have run out of $5 vouchers, you need to either pay in cash (which defeats the purpose of a dining plan) or pay with a $10 voucher and lose $5.05 (which can add up significantly)
c) You can't use the vouchers at Downtown Disney restaurants

If a guest does not have a CM, AP, AAA or other discount for a meal then the best deal is the character meal vouchers from Get Away Travel. If the guest uses GAT vouchers and buys at least 3 meals then there is a savings. By three meals I mean one person for 3 different meals or 3 people eating at only one character meal for example.

I agree with the prior poster about the DLR meal plan being a waste of money. If you are prone to budgeting problems then buy Disney gift cards or traveller's checks. There are ways to put aside money before hand so that you will not be spending the money on the first day.

The meal plan is not a good value. But the character meal vouchers from GAT or other places do give a bit of a savings

I am probably an exception to everyone else, but we like using them, we have had them for every trip. We don't buy them for the discounts but for the ability to pre-pay our meals before the trip. I don't have any problems with the issues of no cash back. We always use them and work it out where we pay a couple of bucks in cash, so it really isn't an issue for us.

I LOVE THEM

they do save you money if you are wanting
1 character interaction
or two some nice sit down places
We have done the 5day an this time were doing the 6 day
no there not as good as wdw but I do see them as useful an better then cash

i just did the math an just the character meals were doing an tickets. all separate instead of our package wed be saving 160 but we would then need other food an with the meal plan after our character meals we each adult has dollars left(70 or 80 in 15$ an 10$ meal vouchers) so i see value in it. also the kid would have like 30 left

(heres the 6day plan if it helps)

Well Jade, that's comparing the total package price.

But just looking at the meal plan, you're barely saving (and we wouldn't, b/c we wouldn't choose Goofy's at dinnertime and that doesn't max out the value of the character meal voucher) vs just paying out of pocket.

Because the discount for the package is really off the hotel room and some off the tickets...the tickets are valued as the pre-purchase price (which you can get online), as one finds out when one upgrades them, the meal plan has a set price depending on how many people and how many days...so the hotel is where the real discount is coming in. A package can be better over all, but the meal plan is still being charged as the meal plan, and since almost all of the meal plan is dollar-for-dollar vouchers, there's almost no savings.

But my answer to this is always: it has no value for me, but it does have value, mainly in the pre-pay department, for some others! :)

Kind of off topic but seeing Jade's meal plan makes me feel better about $ I have budgeted for our meals in gift cards and Disney dollars
I have pretty much budgeted dollar for dollar the same :)

Smart way to do it and if you do not spend all of your set dining budget then you can blow it on Mickey Bars, Dole Whips and popcorn.
