Question about making a reservation shorter, on the front end

If I have a reservation for 7 nights and want to change it to a reservation for 6 nights starting a day later, does that new reservation depend on existing availability, or can the existing reservation be shortened even if the resort is otherwise fully booked?

The shorter stay must be available in order to modify. It used to be easy to drop nights from an existing reservation, but Disney has changed that policy making it harder to shorten trips.

It is based on the availability and it seems your current reservation does not count as available.

I noticed a lot of hotels are doing this. I want to drop a day in Anaheim (at a non-Disney hotel) and to do so we would have to recheck dates and the price went up double per a night just to drop one night.
