Question about hours on CP

I know there are a few people that post here that have done the CP before and I have a quick question for you. My daughter is doing Merch at HS right now and is working 6 days a week since the day she got there. Is this normal? she's only been there for six weeks and is already starting to get a little run down. I think that 50+ hours a week in "slow season" has her a little scared of the coming holiday season.

Also should mention they move her all over the place. Tower, Coaster, Idol and Fantasmic are on her schedule every week. In a few cases her schedule has overlapped the next week where she has worked 8-9 days in a row before getting any time off. She tried to trade (not give away) a shift to go to an event with her roommates and after several girls offered to trade her she was told she couldn't because she was on full overtime :confused3 what's that about?

I guess the good part is she has already saved several hundred dollars because she has no time to spend it ;)

Hours depend so much on what area you are in. Maybe she is working a lot because there just aren't enough people hired in that area right now, could be a lot of reasons. The switching shifts thing can be tricky. There are rules about switching shifts with someone - ie: if you switch shifts and that person will be getting overtime and you were not on overtime then you can't switch (it would cost Disney more money for that person to work).

Maybe suggest that she talk to her manager and see if they think her hours will always be like this or if there is some current reason for it. Also she could ask them to explain switching shifts so that she knows in the future who and what situations she can switch for because switching is definitely allowed Hours can get pretty intense... truth be told they pay her less than other cast members even when she is on overtime so that is part of it.

As with all Walt Disney World Company Cast Members, all College and International Program Participants at the Walt Disney World Resort are scheduled according to the labour needs of our areas.

It should be noted that all C&IP Cast Members did agree to Full Availability for the length of their programmes, which does include Overtime and 6/7 Day when needed.

Participants who are interested in requesting additional time off may submit a request to the Labor Service Center. The procedure on how to do this is a key part of the Onboarding process. Walt Disney World Resort Labor Operations will review and approve or deny the request based on our Business Needs and Seniority.

Based on your post, I assume that your daughter is statused to Sunset Merchandise Operations at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This particular work area consists of Tower Merchandise, Coaster Merchandise, Fantasmic! Merchandise, and Sunset Squeeze Breeze. Cast Members statused to this area can be scheduled and or deployed to any of these locations at any time. In addition, all College and International Program Participants are subject to deployment to other Areas and/or positions as dictated by Business Needs.

Cast Members are certainly allowed to exchange shifts. However, they may not exchange shifts that causes the company to pay unscheduled overtime. There are certain rules regarding Overtime stipulated within the Service Trades Council Union Collective Bargaining Agreements that apply to Casual Temporary, Casual Regular and Full Time Cast Members that do not apply to College and International Program Participants. This could be one of the many reasons that your daughter may not have a Shift Exchange request approved.

If you daughter has any questions, comments or concerns with regards to her schedule, please have her direct them to a Retail Guest Service Manager in her area. She may also contact and submit a question to Walt Disney World Resort Labor Operations through the Labor Service Center.
