Hi - planning our first trip for Aug 2010. I dont want to hire a car and am going to stay on site at POR. So - my question is - is anywhere walkable? DTD, Epcot, MK or any of the other hotels? any info greatly appreciated about whether we can get anywhere by foot and how long that would take. thanks loads xxx

you can get a boat from POR to DTD. its a really nice ride down the river. you can also walk between POR and POFQ
you cant really walk anywhere on site, disney world is about the same size as greater manchester. you can get buses to all the parks, but its not really walkable. sorry :)

you get the free disney buses so you dont really need a car to get around disney

There is also a small supermarket and a few shops that are walkable from downtown disney, its called crossroads. There is a tgi fridays there as well

Nothing is walkable from POR. With the exception of DTD (boat or bus) all other areas require a bus ride. There is no need to have a car if you are onsite.

You can walk to POFQ from POR and the grounds around POR are very nice to walk round.

The car is king in the US in general and there are very few footpaths.

There are places you can walk to from the parks. In Epcot you can exit via the International Gateway and walk round the Epcot resorts (Boardwalk, Swan/Dolphin and Yacht/Beach Clubs) and also walk to DHS.
From the Dolphin hotel you can also walk to the Fantasia minigolf courses.

From MK you can walk to the Contempory resort.

I think you will do more than enough walking round the parks though :)

You will do so much walking in the parks you will be glad he buses take you everywhere!!

...and dont (easily) want to go anywhere offsite.

Depends on what you mean by 'easily' :)

Nothing is easier than a taxi or Towncar to get off site - even easier than driving if you are not sure of the roads or are not confident in driving in the US. It can work out expensive if you plan to make a lot of trips off site though, but for a few trips it's cheaper then 2 weeks car insurance :)
