Question about flying

My SIL just informed me that when they flew her dad opened a drink box and it started spraying because of the pressure. Will this really happen? Our flight does not serve anything but said that we can bring snacks aboard. So we were thinking of bringing water or juice boxes for the kids and some cracker packs ect to nibble on.

Yes, it can happen, but won't always.

Best to open any liquid container SLOWLY, holding a napkin near the opening in case it leaks. With a juice box, punch the hole just a bit to let the pressure equalize before putting the straw all the way down.

Yep. If you want some fun entertainment, take a small snack-sized package of chips on the plane. Leave them closed/ factory sealed. After the initial take off, put your tray table down and put the bag on the tray table. As you go up in altitude, the bag will begin to puff up. The air in the bag has less barometric pressure forcing against it at altitude. Yes, your cabin is pressurized, but it's not pressurized to anything close to sea-level. Upon descent, you'll notice your bag of chips begins to get smaller (provided you were able to resist the urge to snack). I guess it would get smaller that way too, but due to different circumstances!!!
