The short question

If I take a pair of eyeglasses I currently have (that contain my updated perscription) to an optical place, can they get my perscription from the lenses? (I'm in the market for some new frames.) OR - is my contact perscription the same as my eyeglass perscription? (meaning - are they represented the same way? ie... -2.5 and -3.25?)

The long question
Going along with the above...I got an eye exam in May under my vision plan. I didn't know I was ALSO on my HUSBANDS vision plan. He said - go get another exam before the end of the year - use it or lose it. I already used MY plan to get my disposable contacts for the year. Can I just use THAT perscription, and go to an optician with HIS vision plan and use it to get new glasses?

or is this totally wrong? I mean - we paid for both vision plans not knowing it...so yes, i had "double" the insurance for vision this past year.

In response to your long question -- I'm pretty sure that you can use the prescription from May and use it to get new glasses. I don't know if your contact prescription is the same as glasses and I don't think they would make new glasses based on your old glasses, they'd want a recent eye exam.

They can get your prescription from your current glasses. Also, since you paid for the coverage there isn't any reason not to get a second exam on his plan.

You can definitely get your presciption off of your existing glasses, but for some reason, many optical stores will refuse to do it. I always assumed that they wanted to sell you an exam.

The Rx for contacts is different than for glasses.

AS long as your glasses Rx is correct, they can use your glasses to get your Rx, but if they are not correct (error when being made), you're better off getting the new exam.

I should have added, the lenses in my glasses ARE up to date...I'm just sick of the frames!

guess I'll just call the place and find out for sure.
thanks!

My glasses and contact prescriptions are different--whenever I have the exam, I ask for the prescription for both simply because my eyes are REALLY bad and I need the prescriptions in case my glasses should break or I should lose a contact.

Regarding your long question--I used to have double vision insurance, too, through myself and through my ex simply because I knew that I probably would need new contacts AND new glasses in any given year. As long as you're paying for both plans, you can use both.

For some reason they have to have proof that your presciption is current. Can you go back to the store where you purchased your glasses? Lensecrafters keeps scrips on file. You can also contact the doc who gave you a scrip in May. They could fax it to you.

well - i went to TARGET for my eye exam...and they really don't have a decent selection of 'cute' glasses.

i think i'll just go the whole "get the eye exam/new glasses" route...just so i don't have to go AGAIN in May for another yearly exam.

thanks all!

I needed a pair of prescription sunglasses (for a trip to WDW, actually!) on short notice so I went to Lenscrafters with my regular glasses. They said they had the ability to do it, but that they weren't allowed. They had to call my regular eye doc and have them fax over the actuall prescription. I forget the reason why, but it's not allowed. They didn't try to sell me an eye exam though, they just asked for the name of my doctor, and called him for me.
