Question about expiration dates

Even though I (supposedly) decided that DVC was not for us, I just can't stop thinking about it.

I was reading the DVC Resource Sticky and wondered about expiration dates. Why was the expiration for BWV, VWL, and BCV set for 2042, and not extended until 2057 like OKW? It just seems curious to me that properties that opened 5, 9, and 11 years (respectively) after OKW would have the same expiration date that OKW originally had, especially since every resort since SSR has a later expiration date. Anyone know what the reasoning was/is? :confused3

DVC sold extensions for OKW so some contacts have later dates. The implementation of the sale was confusing and ill conceived and didn't have many takers.

:earsboy: Bill

Disney does things that are confusing and ill conceived?

NEVER!

:lmao:

So glad they've changed since 1991. Oh wait...

The OKW extension was a disaster. Overpriced and even a bit iffy on the legal side.

Also, you might notice that OKW is a standalone resort. BWV connects to BWI. VWL connects to WL and so on... Even if they solved the OKW issues, there are new issues with being connected to resorts run by the nonDVC Hotel division...

No one knows for sure but some of the problems are obvious.

OK, so even if an extension was thought up by someone wearing their Bad Idea Jeans that day, why make the lease period of BWV, VWL, and BCV so relatively short? Even taking the extension issue out of it, I would have expected BWV to be at least 2047, VWL to be 2051, and BCV to be 2053, not set to the initial expiration of OKW. Anyone know the justification for that?

They didn't with less than 50 years, because they could. And those resorts sold out very quickly.
Also I don't believe they had any idea of what a mess it will be Jan 31, 2042 when most of the resorts will become un-owned. I assume they will have a DVC boss someday that will be able to look 20-30... years in the future and fix this problem.

nah.

but on the other side of it, management at the time may have been thinking it might be nice to get ownership back of the BCV building with only 39-40 years of wear-and-tear on it, instead of 50...and after selling it at a higher upfront price than OKW...

but it will definitely be interesting to see how they handle a potential mass expiration...

I'm not going to worry about Jan 31, 2042. I'll probably be dead.

I am going to guess that DVC will repackage new points for sale from the mass amount that will expire in Jan 2042. Probably, giving current owners first dibs, then other DVC owners 2nd, then the general public. I'm not sure what price/pt it'll be sold at though, since the resorts will not be brand new.

It's a long time away though, 29 years ago, there was no DVC, so lot can happen in the next 3 decades. They could demolish and rebuild, renovate, or just get out of DVC all together, since the sales people keep saying how much you'll save when you buy DVC, Disney must be losing money :thumbsup2

I wouldn't doubt that Disney wanted the flexibility to completely discontinue DVC in or near 2042, should they have chosen. Sometime before the offering of SSR, the powers that be decided that the program would be viable "permanently."

That is why we bought VWL resale. I will be pretty old when it expires if not dead, so I won't be saddling my children with maintenance fees.

Same as disneybuckeye here. VWL expires during my 70th birthday year. If I'm still going strong it will be fun to see where the rofr thread is then. Lol
