Question about earrings/piercing

My younger dd has been begging to have her ears pierced, and am debating letting her do it for her 7th birthday (in a couple weeks).

I'm a little unfamiliar though with the whole process of this.. I know you're supposed to leave the original earrings in for a certain period of time.. how long is that timeframe? And is there a specific type of earring that needs to be the first ones?

Was hoping I could surprise her by giving her a pair of earrings on her birthday.. but wasn't sure what kind to get? 14k gold? Sterling silver?

Is it even possible to use a store-bought pair of earrings as the first pair?

You buy the piercing earrings when you get her ears pierced. That is what you pay for (at least by me), the piercing is free. I would only use 14K gold or Sterling Silver. Not cheap ones or she can get an infection. My DD got her ears pierced when she was 5 months old, and we were told to keep them in 6-8 weeks, but we kept them in longer just to be safe. You do have to clean them with solution they give you several times a day to prevent infection.

The piercing earrings are a lot different now than what they were when I was a kid. Then, they only had gold ball types. Now they have many different styles to choose from. I got my DD cubic zirconia ones. I think they all have safety style backs on them also.

ETA - you might be able to buy the piercing earrings at a place like Piercing Pagoda (in the mall) and explain to them that your
DD is going to come back and have her ears pierced but you just want to give her the earrings to surprise her. They might let you
do that.
